8 facts about Taiwan and U.S. intervention 🧵

Taiwan was taken from China by Japan in 1895, during the “Century of Humiliation” when China was subjugated to and dismembered by colonial powers until the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) at the end of the Chinese Civil War & the victory of the revolution.

2) In 1949 when the U.S.-backed nationalist KMT army lost against the communists in the Chinese Civil War, they fled to Taiwan, and their government, the Republic of China (ROC), became the current government of Taiwan.

3) U.S.-backed KMT rule over Taiwan was maintained through massive repression.

4) The ROC, with U.S. support, still claimed that it was the govt. of all of China, despite Taiwan being less than 1 half of 1 percent of Chinese land. The ROC was the official representative of all of China at the UN until 1971.

5) In the 1972 Shanghai Communiqué official diplomatic agreement the U.S. declares:

"there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China." &

"[the U.S.] reaffirms its interest in a peaceful settlement of the Taiwan question by the Chinese themselves."

6) Since 1979 the U.S. has sold $89 Billion+ in military hardware to Taiwan. Most recently the Biden admin approved the sale of $750 Million in tanks.

The U.S. regularly carries out "freedom of navigation operations" that send warships between Taiwan and mainland China.

8) In October 2021, U.S. officials admitted that U.S. special forces and marines have secretly been in Taiwan training Taiwanese troops since 2020 or earlier.
