1. PDRM have identified 78 individuals in connection with the #TangkapAzamBaki protest and 28 others from a pre-event on Friday night that called for the MACC chief's resignation.

However police say no arrests or seizures were carried out at the two gatherings.
2. Several political party youth leaders and activists who attended the ceramah were questioned by police yesterday.

Among them were DAP Youth chief Howard Lee, Muda VP Dr Thanussha Francis Xavier, PKR Youth secretary Ahmad Syukri and Amanah Youth leader Mohd Hasbie.
3. “A thorough effort is being put in place when it comes to the investigation against activists and protesters but not against Azam,” Thanussha told FMT.

“We will keep fighting to ensure Azam is investigated fairly despite these police intimidation tactics.”

1. WCS Malaysia programme country director Mark Darmaraj refutes Abdul Khalim's claims that deforested areas are good for tigers.

"Clear felling is not good for any wildlife including tigers. Period.”

Mark was the lead author of a study cited by the JPNK director.
2. Mark noted that the 2009 research was only the second-ever population density estimate of tigers in Malaysia.

“It showed that selectively logged forests have the potential to harbour a high tiger density."
3. The study alluded the regeneration of vegetation after selective logging could allow tiger prey to thrive and subsequently has the potential to contribute to a higher tiger density.

However Mark says the paper clearly states that this hypothesis remains to be investigated.

1. A disability rights group has called KPWKM Minister Rina Harun "heartless" following issues with JKM's cashless assistance programme.

“At least have some courtesy to ask us what our needs are. They are treating us like animals,” says ILTC president Francis Siva. Image
2. Criticisms of the program include limiting the stores users could shop at, which would burden people with disabilities, as well as for not engaging the community before it was implemented.

“JKM Cashless is a nuisance, the minister has no heart for us."
3. Several disability rights organisations submitted a memorandum on the matter to deputy minister Siti Zailah during a protest today (Jan 25).

When the group asked when they would receive a response from the ministry, she responded with “Insyaallah”.

1. The Vibes reports the orangutan population in Baram, Sarawak has vanished due to years of logging and palm oil projects.

“These beautiful creatures are gentle and harmless, but the humans who depleted their habitats also depleted their populations,” says SAM's Jok Jau Evong. Image
2. “The orangutans have already disappeared from Baram, totally.

There was a time many decades ago when these orangutans could be found in the lower and middle parts of Baram," says Jok, who is SAM's ground coordinator for Sarawak.
3. “Nowadays, if anyone wants to find the orangutans in their natural habitats in northern Sarawak, they can only be found in the mountain ranges bordering between Sarawak and Kalimantan.”

He adds orangutans in the state would have become
extinct if not for conservation efforts

1. UNICEF has warned that school closures due to Covid-19 are causing severe losses in education among children globally.

"We are looking at a nearly insurmountable scale of loss to children’s schooling,” said Robert Jenkins, UNICEF's Chief of Education. Image
2. Over 616 million children remain affected by full or partial closures of schools around the world.

The UN children's agency says the school closures have also affected students' mental health, access to regular sources of nutrition, and put them at greater risk of abuse.
3. “While the disruptions to learning must end, just reopening schools is not enough. Students need intensive support to recover lost education," Jenkins said.

He called for stronger efforts to rebuild children’s mental and physical health, social development and nutrition.

1. The government will soon allow the public to pay highway tolls using any digital payment provider, not just Touch ‘n Go.

However Works Minister Fadillah Yusof says this will depend on RFID reach and when highway concessionaires were ready to link up with additional providers.
2. "It will be up to the public to use any digital mode of payment, whether you want to use Touch ‘n Go e-wallet or debit or credit card or Visa or Mastercard or any kind of (electronic) payment system as long as there’s a link available on a (particular) highway,” says Fadillah.
3. He adds that only one RFID tag would be required for this purpose.

“We have been listening to the people’s demand to open more and we are aware that people have been complaining that they have to pay in advance for Touch ‘n Go whether they are using (the highway) or not.”

1. Kelantan Forestry Department director Abdul Khalim has been criticised for saying deforestation is good for tigers.

"Khalim must be dreaming of his cat at home when he told the press that," says Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng.

He warns the country risked becoming a laughing stock.
2. Lim cited The National Geographic, saying, "80% of Earth's land animals and plants live in forests, and deforestation threatens species including the Sumatran tiger."

Meanwhile, PEKA has called the remarks irresponsible and urged Perhilitan to issue a statement on the matter.
3. PEKA President Shariffa Sabrina also told FMT there was no clear data available about the amount of forest that the government has set aside for logging.

“As far as we know, the CTT in Kelantan is highly questionable and cannot be trusted. "
