Breaking: The State Bar of California has been conducting an investigation into whether its own employees helped Tom Girardi escape discipline for cheating clients.
latimes.com/california/sto…
A Times investigation last year found that Girardi cultivated bar investigators with private plane rides, wine-soaked lunches and free legal representation at a time he was accused of siphoning client settlement money and other unethical behavior.

latimes.com/california/sto…
Girardi, who gained pop culture cache alongside his third wife, Erika Jayne, on #RHOBH saw his Wilshire Boulevard law firm and reputation collapse in December 2020.
latimes.com/california/sto…
The immediate cause was a judicial finding that he had misappropriated $2 million from the families of victims of an Indonesian air crash, but evidence of additional wrongdoing spanning decades quickly followed.

The probe is the second internal review since The Times began reporting on Girardi’s relationship with bar officials.

A previous audit of complaints against him “revealed mistakes made in some investigations over the many decades of Mr. Girardi’s career.”

Tom Girardi has not practiced law since late 2020 when plane crash victims began clamoring for payment and his firm, Girardi Keese, closed down.

Within months, Girardi had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and placed in a court-ordered conservatorship with a younger brother serving as his legal guardian.

As coronavirus transmission rates drop across California, indicating that the surge spawned by Omicron is flattening, many are wondering whether the latest variant will be the last surge of the COVID-19 pandemic.

latimes.com/california/sto… Image
There remains considerable debate around that question. Some experts are loath to make forecasts, given that prior predictions of the pandemic’s conclusion haven’t proved true.

Scientists generally say it’s too early to declare an “endgame” for COVID-19.

Dr. Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, says we need to be prepared for more surprises after Omicron’s surge fades. He cautioned against thinking that the drop in cases means the 2-year-old pandemic will be over soon.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers reached an agreement to again require employers to provide workers with up to two weeks of supplemental paid sick leave to recover from COVID-19 or care for a family member with the virus.

latimes.com/california/sto… Image
The legislation, which lawmakers would likely fast-track to the governor in the coming weeks, would apply to all businesses with 26 or more employees. A similar law from 2021 that provided 80 hours of supplemental paid sick leave expired Sept. 30.

latimes.com/california/sto…
Labor unions pushed the new proposal at the Capitol as California grapples with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant. State officials hope the deal will encourage workers with the virus to stay home and help slow transmission.
