The California Youth Football Act - #AB1 sets the strongest safety requirements ever created for youth tackle football.
The bill passed unanimously in Sacramento. (1)
And, was easily signed by @GavinNewsom thus putting California in a leadership role once again, along with allowing the sport of youth tackle football to continue to be played here.
This new bill would task the @CA_OSG with setting a minimum age at which kids may play youth tackle football in California based on a newly created commission & their recommendation. (3)
This commission would take one year to gather information on youth tackle football, TBI & the supposed relation to #CTE.
Ultimately this commission will not find anything new,
as there is no definitive data to prove any of it. (4)
To the contrary, there is more information & data available to suggest that there is no correlation between youth tackle football & #CTE, thus the use of the word “supposed” in the new bill. (5)
And, as of the past month there was a new study completed on youth tackle football, the longest of it’s kind that found no correlation between head impacts & cognitive decline. (6) highlandcountypress.com/Content/Sports…
So, why do we need a commission lead by our State Surgeon General to research something that is already widely known, youth tackle football has not been proven to cause long term health issues for those who play it? (7)
Wouldn’t it be better to allow the California Youth Football Act - #AB1 to run it’s course for a few years & study it’s impact on the sport in our State?
Why pass such a great piece of legislation, just to come back a few years later & kill it?
Sacramento should do better. (8
And, they can do better by not passing #AB1348 & let leagues in California fully implement #AB1, thus allowing parents the opportunity to decide wether or not youth tackle football is the right sport for their child under the current safety law. #LetThemTackle
