1. People think that Republicans are introducing bills banning Critical Race Theory in schools.

This is misleading. Most of the bills don't even mention CRT.

It is a sweeping attack on free speech inside and outside schools.

2. A new report from @PENamerica revealed that, in the first few weeks of 2022 there were 71 BILLS introduced in states restricting the speech of teachers

Many bills contain basic factual errors, contradictory language, or leave important terms undefined

popular.info/p/2022-the-yea…
3. In Florida, @RonDeSantisFL is pushing legislation that would prohibit any kind of instruction or training in schools OR PRIVATE BUSINESSES that makes white people feel "feel discomfort, guilt, [or] anguish."

popular.info/p/2022-the-yea…
4. The Florida bill explicitly requires teachers to lie to students.

It requires teachers to define "American history…as the creation of a new nation based largely on the universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence."

popular.info/p/2022-the-yea…
5. Of course, at the founding, the principles stated in the Declaration of Independence were not universal. Black people, women, and other groups had few rights. The bill would prohibit teachers from telling the truth about American history.

popular.info/p/2022-the-yea…
6. There are dozens of bills all around the country attempting to impose similar restrictions. And at least 10 similar bills that have already become law.

Missouri alone has 19 bill pending that restrict speech

popular.info/p/2022-the-yea…
7. Tucker Carlson losing an advertiser is not an attack on free speech.

Laws prohibiting teachers and others from expressing certain views or telling the truth is an assault on the First Amendment

popular.info/p/2022-the-yea…
8. The people who have spent years claiming to be champions of free speech have gone quiet.

And media coverage, relative to the scope of this free speech attack, is scant

The Mcminn County School board in Tennessee just voted to ban a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Holocaust

The vote was 10-0

Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. There is a wave of book banning across the nation.

1. It's worth digging into @pepsi's response to our report that it sent 15K to the Texas GOP after the party passed an abortion ban

It's a case study on how corporations seek to evade accountability for political activity

@pepsi 2. The first tactic is just to ignore the issue.

@pepsi didn't respond to my inquiry about the donation last week.

That backfired when the story went viral and #boycottpepsi became the top trending topic in the United States

popular.info/p/update-facin…
3. When @pepsi responded on Tuesday, it cast the 15K donation as part of its support for the party convention

The point @pepsi is trying to make here is that they don't support these anti-abortion policies. It's INDIFFERENT.

Not sure that's better

UPDATE: Facing calls for a boycott on social media, @pepsi is defending its 15K donation to the Texas GOP

Pepsi tells popular.info that it sent the check to the Texas GOP in the summer of 2020 but it wasn't cashed until August 2021

@pepsi I contacted PepsiCo prior to publication but did not receive a response.

Since Pepsi is making an issue of the timing the check was sent (prior to the passage of the abortion ban), I've asked if they plan on making any changes to their political giving moving forward
@pepsi The other issue is that, if @pepsi objected to the fact that the Texas GOP was pushing through a draconian abortion ban, it could have canceled the check.

It chose not to.

As a result, the Texas GOP was able to cash the check on 8/5/21. Here is how it showed up on the filing. Image

1. In May, Texas Republicans enacted a draconian abortion ban and a system of vigilante justice to enforce it.

In response, numerous large corporations wrote these Texas Republicans substantial checks.

2. @ATT CEO John Stankey said one of the company's "core values" is "gender equity and the empowerment of women."

On 11/20/21, @ATT donated 50K from its corporate treasury to the Texas Senate Republicans who unanimously approved the abortion ban

@ATT 3. On 12/14/21, @ATT's corporate PAC donated 30K to @DadePhelan, the Texas House Speaker who marshaled the abortion ban through the House.

1. There are 150K people in US hospitals with COVID and it put the hospital system into a state of crisis.

Yes, more people should get vaccinated.

But why don't we have enough hospital beds to deal with this emergency?

Follow along for the answer

popular.info/p/why-arent-th…
2. There are FAR FEWER hospital beds in the US today than there were just a few decades ago.

In 1975, when the country had 113 million fewer people, there were 1.5 million hospital beds in the US.

Today, there are just over 900,000.

What happened?

popular.info/p/why-arent-th…
3. Between 2010 and 2020 there were more than 680 hospital mergers. Over the same time period, "at least 120 rural hospitals have shuttered."

This has coincided with a vertical acquisition of other health care facilities and providers by hospitals.

Interesting statement as no one reported that "Justice Sotomayor asked Justice Gorsuch to wear a mask."

The report was that Chief Justice Roberts asked EVERYONE to wear a mask and Gorsuch refused.
And no pushback on two facts:

1. Gorsuch didn't wear a mask

2. That's why Sotomayor had to participate remotely
Roberts is also out with a statement.

The original report says that Roberts "in some form asked the other justices to mask up."

Roberts now says he "did not request" Gorsuch mask up.

We'll see what @NinaTotenberg says
