In wake of the recent activity in the #fooddelivery space - Swiggy becoming a #decacorn, Dunzo raising capital from Reliance & Zomato shares slipping on the stock exchange - I believe it’s an opportune time for throwback to an article I published sometime back.
A short 🧵evaluating how the space has evolved since then (refer to the article for context👇) linkedin.com/feed/update/ur…
👉 Big Tech (Amazon & Google) making inroads into the space
While Amazon & Google have been running pilots in some pockets in the country, neither have made any meaningful strides in the space till now. Perhaps, we might see some activity by these two in 2022/23.
👉 Emergence of Quick Commerce
As predicted, quick commerce arrived in a big way in 2021 and the delivery aggregators, given their expertise in logistics, technology, AI/ML and an existing customer base and delivery fleet, were well positioned to venture into the space.
Swiggy (by way of Instamart & Genie), Zomato (by way of investment in grofers, now Blinkit), Reliance-backed Dunzo, Tata-backed bigbasket.com, Ola (Ola Dash) and the new kid in town Zepto are all competing head-on for their piece of the pie!
👉 Re-emergence of cloud kitchens
This was partially correct. While we have witnessed increased listings of cloud kitchens on delivery platforms and also emergence of a few multi brand cloud kitchens, we are yet to witness a new standalone cloud kitchen marketplace.
