This 👆 Global Times piece was part of a sustained attack on foreign journalists by Chinese state media and authorities during the Henan floods last summer.
It started when state media including Xinhua News Agency promoted the hashtag ‘BBC spreads rumours’ and The Henan Chinese Communist Party Youth League called on people to follow @robindbrant and share information of his whereabouts.
When asked about the harassment Zhao Lijian criticised the BBC for spreading ‘false information’. And China Daily published a video which said the anger towards foreign reporters was ‘well based’.
Hu Xijin told his followers on Weibo that the most difficult thing to do in China is to conceal.
The news this week that officials have been arrested for concealing the true death toll has been reported globally BUT has not been reported by mainstream Chinese State Media.
Journalists play an important role in ensuring transparency and should be able to do their job without fear of intimidation. #DefendMediaFreedom
