Democrats complained for years about secretive political spending.

But in 2020, as they worked to beat Trump & take the Senate, they outpaced Republicans in “dark money,” @ShaneGoldmacher & I found in a @nytimes analysis.

Free link for non-subscribers: nytimes.com/2022/01/29/us/…
Our analysis found that 15 of the most politically active nonprofits that generally align with Democrats spent more than $1.5 BILLION in 2020, compared to roughly $900 million spent by a comparable sample of 15 of the most politically active groups aligned with Republicans.
So-called "dark money" is difficult to track & quantify.

We spent a lot of time honing our methodology, but we acknowledge it is imperfect for reasons I detail in the linked thread.

We welcome your thoughts on what we could have done differently.
We anticipate disagreements about our methodology & application.

But strategists from both parties generally agreed in interviews with our conclusion that the left outpaced the right in secretive nonprofit spending & sophistication in 2020.

One of the main reasons: TRUMP.
Some Dem donors have cast secretive political spending as a corruption of democracy.

But they viewed a prospective 2nd Trump term as even more of a threat, so they embraced dark money as a means to an end.

Also: some welcomed anonymity as a way to avoid being targeted by Trump.
The left's dark money surge wasn't only from the usual suspects.

New donors & groups joined in.

A new nonprofit with ties to increasingly active tech billionaires, @futureforwardus, raised $150M in 2020.

@OpenSecretsDC examined the group & its super PAC opensecrets.org/news/2020/10/p…
As Rob Stein (founder of the DEMOCRACY ALLIANCE & one of the architects of today’s big-money left) told me:

“A range of donors — not just traditional progressive Democrats — had a wake-up call around 2019 where they realized that our constitutional republic was at risk…"
But Democrats’ success in harnessing secretive nonprofit spending in 2020 exposed the tension between their efforts to win elections & their commitment to curtail secretive political spending by the superrich.

Here's a nice look at that tension by @rmc031 prospect.org/power/democrat…
Another factor: leading GOP donors & operatives were conflicted over whether & how to support Trump.

Evidence: groups devoted to GOP congressional candidates were financially competitive with Dem counterparts, but groups devoted to Trump got trounced by those boosting Biden.
Both parties are aggressively raising dark money headed into the midterms.

Democrats are urging their donors not to give in to complacency.

And groups affiliated with GOP congressional leaders raised big sums in 2021 (per @PunchbowlNews & @foxnews). foxbusiness.com/politics/senat…
Meanwhile, watchdogs warn the continued growth of dark money could further undermine trust in our political system.

Dem legislation to require more disclosure was included in the voting & election overhaul legislation that failed in the Senate this month. nytimes.com/2022/01/19/us/…

WHY WE DID THIS STORY: @ShaneGoldmacher & I debated whether the limitations of assessing “dark money” made it worth trying at all.

We decided the difficulty was not a good reason to shy away.

In fact, the opacity was partly why we deemed this worthwhile. nytimes.com/2022/01/29/us/…
Secretive nonprofit spending shapes much of our politics, from campaigns to fights over voting rules & SCOTUS seats.

But it's difficult to get info about the donors & groups.

That's partly thanks to lax disclosure rules, & partly because some groups further obscure the $ flow.
There's no way to comprehensively search top spending groups.

They have file to file public tax returns (990s), but they're sparse, can be tough to obtain & come 12+ mos. after the relevant election.

That’s why we’re posting this story now — nearly 15 months after Election Day.

As they push back on BIDEN's big domestic policy bill, @SenatorSinema & @Sen_JoeManchin have been actively courting prominent Republican donors, many of whom have given to the Democrats for the 1st time this year, including:

MANCHIN & SINEMA took fundraising swings thru Texas (in July & Sept, respectively) that yielded GOP $, including separate events at BRINT RYAN's $18M home that were facilitated with help from Ryan's partner JEFF MILLER, a top fundraiser for @GOPLeader. 2/ ryan.com/europe/about-r…
Among the major GOP donors who gave to JOE MANCHIN for the 1st time this year:
➡️HAROLD HAMM: oil billionaire who pushed TRUMP to deregulate energy.
➡️ROY BAILEY: finance official for TRUMP's inauguration & c4.
➡️ANDY BEAL: donated $3M to TRUMP super PAC.

In the 1st half of 2021 (under BIDEN), Ricchetti’s firm collected $1.67M in fees. wsj.com/articles/lobby…
Since the election, companies with huge interests in US policy (@amazon, @GM & the co. behind the Keystone Pipeline) have signed JEFF RICCHETTI to lobby.

But the WH said STEVE RICCHETTI recuses himself from matters concerning his brother Jeff’s clients. wsj.com/articles/lobby…

Trying to avoid watching the @sixers, but I’ll probably cave & tune in, since I am a Philly fan, & therefore a glutton for optimism-crushing disappointment.
At least Ben Simmons is trying to foul out. That will make this game somewhat easier to watch.
We are witnessing a Carson Wentz-level regression from Ben Simmons.

NEW: Former RUDY GIULIANI associates PAVEL FUKS & ANDRII TELIZHENKO are sued by an estranged associate of Fuks who alleges Fuks (a developer who once discussed a Moscow project with TRUMP) is "an agent of Russian intelligence services, & a money launderer" documentcloud.org/documents/2080…
The suit was brought by YURI VANETIK, a prominent GOP fundraiser & sometime lobbyist.

In 2019, PAVEL FUKS had sued Vanetik for bilking him out of $200k he paid for VIP tickets to TRUMP's inauguration.

Fuks ended up watching the inauguration from a DC bar nytimes.com/2019/06/18/us/…
The suit alleges PAVEL FUKS sought contacts with
TRUMP by retaining well-connected lawyers & consultants, including RUDY GIULIANI.

NEW: Federal investigators executed a search warrant on Wednesday at RUDY GIULIANI’s NYC apartment, seizing his electronic devices.

It’s a sign that the criminal investigation is ramping up into his dealings in Ukraine, including whether he violated FARA. nytimes.com/2021/04/28/nyr…
UPDATE: @FBI also executed a search warrant at the home of @VicToensing, a lawyer who worked with GIULIANI on the BIDEN dirt-digging campaign.

She had dealt with, & discussed representing, YURIY LUTSENKO, the Ukrainian prosecutor who provided info to Rudy nytimes.com/2021/04/28/nyr…
A spokesman for @VicToensing tells me she's been informed "she is a not a target of the investigation.”
