I’m about to head out to the theater to catch the Get Back IMAX, and I’ll report back after for those who weren’t able to make it. Til then, seems like a good a time as any to remember the tortured story of the Let It Be film theymaybeparted.com/2021/11/22/tmb…
Get Back at the IMAX was a pretty spectacular experience, for several reasons. And we came full circle: After watching the Beatles rehearse for a TV show, we saw the concert movie in the theater. Just like they planned it all along.
My main hope was realized: The sound would make the trip to the theater worth it. The Beatles were larger than life on the big screen, but I expected that (and aren’t they always?).
The sound not only boomed, putting my sound bar to shame. But the differences in sound as they went from roof to street was staggering. It was the first of the countless times I watched the rooftop that it really felt like I was watching a real concert, not just a performance
Peter Jackson had a live 30-min Q&A prior to the screening, and said the IMAX sound was mixed specially for this (by Giles Martin, naturally) at the UK’s only IMAX sound editing studio which is at … Twickenham Film Studios. “Twickenham gets the last word.” Circle of life ⭕️🙌🦁
As for the content, the film was virtually identical to the final day of the series (Jan 30 content plus the messing around on Jan 31, plus the intro history reel that preceded Pt 1). No bonus footage, we still need to beg to a Disney.
Oh, the additional real estate on the screen made the split-screens much more palatable, as you’d imagine. I gotta get a bigger TV.
After the show we were handed a few mementos: a 19”x13” poster, a lanyard and little credit-card-like thing with the Let It Be album cover on one side and a QR code link to the Beatles online store on the other.
This card is now the ONLY form of payment I’m willing to use, and it’s in my wallet next to my driver’s license. 💳
My kids (9 & 11) were the youngest ones in the theater, but they were all in, just like they were all month watching the show. Future is in good hands. 9yo would see it again. 11 yo now understood how I could “talk so long” to the loquacious PJ.
I was hoping to take a picture with a movie theater poster but there wasn’t one, just a little movie time thing above the door. I settled for a selfie with the Jackass Forever display, allowing a lot of space for a @stovewithahouse joke.
I’m going to pick up on the Get Back family rewatch thread later tonight on what we all actually saw today (in theaters and TV), the usual tweets. I still can’t get over how we got this. I never would have imagined when I woke up three years ago.
Usually I watch Let It Be on Jan 2, but now with #TheBeatlesGetBack in our ears and in our eyes, I'll do what many of us are probably doing & watching the corresponding days in GB. I also hoping the bite-sized pieces is how I get my 9- and 11-year-olds to sit through all 8 hrs.
They're already pretty well versed in the group, as you'd imagine given their lineage.
