#CHEN’s on and off

Q: Are you the type that can completely separate on and off? Or are you the type that thinks about work often during holidays?
A: I am the type that can completely separate the both. Tbh, it is completely impossible to forget about work during private time…

Since it is always in my head. Which is why I try to think about what should I do tmr; what are some aspects I could have improved today, I think of things (like these) that can connect to my future work even at home, to get rid of any negativity I have.

Emotion-wise I can separate my on and off too. But, it is really hard. If I start to think of sth, I start to have other thoughts and feelings which makes me unable to stop thinking. However, I consciously try hard to not let out any negative feelings.

When I am on holidays I just take a rest. (I will) zone out whilst playing movies or music, or zone out when I am taking a bath (laughs)

Q: How do you get your “motivation switch” on?
A: I don’t really need a motivation switch. It could be because I am too used to the lifestyle I have now, but whenever I am outside, or working, I can automatically switch myself into working mode.

Or maybe, such a switch is already inside my body and that is why I feel like I can switch myself into working mode naturally.

Q: What are some interests you are lately addicted to?
A: I am more interested in hobbies I can do at home lately, since I cannot go out often lately due to the pandemic. I have been making things with beads and also doing flower arrangements.

Lately, I have also been challenging myself into cooking for a little, (it is) mainly grill cuisines. But I am a complete beginner at this so I am not good at all. I have only started a month ago (laughs)

But then even someone like me can cook with a little help from people through cooking tutorials. (laughs) I think it didn’t taste bad either. Though I cannot tell if I have the talent to be skilled in cooking or not. (laughs)

Q: The difference between EXO Chen and soloist Chen?
A: I think both represent someone called CHEN. Instead of having differences, there is how Chen is in EXO, and how Chen is during his solo activities, they are all Chen.

However, the soloist Chen wants to show a more lyrical side of his, so I think he has a more easy to approach image. This is not done on purpose, but it’s just how I am doing things I wanted to freely during my solo activities.

Q: What colour will you use to describe your voice?
A: I think it will be a colour like fog. Its white and somewhat foggy that has a little sadness to it…. To be honest I don’t really like my voice that much. (laughs)

I admire a voice that is white and gives a sunny vibe to it instead of foggy whiteness.

Q: What is the process of choosing which songs to upload for your personal youtube channel?
A: I choose everything by myself. I do take into account requests made by fans, but I tend to choose songs I like, things I would like to express

but in the form of songs, I choose songs according to my interests and thoughts.

Q: What role do you think you are in the group?
A: Well of course I will need to protect my role as the main vocalist (laughs) Because lately I have seen members practicing hard on their vocals (laughs) Seeing them working hard makes me…

nervous and feel like I need to work harder on dancing too. (laughs) I want to take the center position of the group. It does not mean I want to be the center (choreography wise) of the group, but to be a support for every other member. Something neutral.

I want to have a position like that. When members need me I will support that part. I want to do that and make EXO into an even better group.

Q: What is a motto you keep in mind and treasure as an artist?
A: Do not be too full of yourself. But there are times when I am quite full of myself (laughs) Due to my job, there are times when I need to be like that. But I feel like if I get too full of myself,

I will not be as hardworking in improving myself, and be too happy with what I have now and I cannot move forward like this. That’s why I always keep in mind to not be too full of myself.

Q: Are there anything you work on to grow as an artist?
A: Practice. Just practice, nothing else. As time passes, music will change according to trends, so I feel like there is a need to brush up my skills often. I always practice according to how the trends (in music) changes.

Q: What kind of activities would you like to challenge yourself as an artist in the future?
A: Instead of challenging myself in a particular genre and concept, one goal of mine is to try hard and be focused on whatever tasks there are. I think how I sing a year later

and how I will be singing ten years later will be different, but I want to make sure I can convey my feelings as how I am during my performances. I want to work hard one by one when I work in the future.
