The Super Bowl will be in Inglewood at SoFi Stadium, world’s most expensive stadium & part of the privately-owned Hollywood Park, approved by officials w/o a ballot measure. It includes Inglewood’s biggest housing project with 2,500 units, of which 0 are for low-income residents.
Gentrification starts like this—as tourism-generating economic incentives that not only neglect the local working class but ultimately drive them out. Inglewood is one of LA’s last black districts, where housing prices have risen dramatically. Yet barely any new affordable units.
More examples of tourism-spurred displacement of locals: The Staples Center in downtown LA. Barclays in Brooklyn. Basically every Olympic stadium around the world, now abandoned with locals evicted. All in the name of tax incentives & photo ops for officials.
