Figuring out what to learn next?

I've been a developer for 20+ years.

Here are the evergreen topics that will always remain important.

🧵
1/7 DSA

Data structure and algorithms are a fundamental part of programming and universal knowledge.

Learn to implement different data structures:

• List
• Array
• Stack
• Queue

and algorithms:

• Traversing
• Searching
• Insertion
• Deletion
• Sorting
• Merging
2/7 Linux/Unix

Small companies, especially startups, always value if you know your way around the shell:
- how to create directories and files
- how to use command line editors such as nano or vim (especially if you know how to exit it)

If you had asked me ten years ago what’s the best way to land a job in IT, I would’ve said get a Computer Science degree.

And I did...

I worked as a software engineer and as a CTO.

If you ask me the same question now, this is what I would do.

🧶
1/4

Open a GitHub account and start hacking on something.

Build your own thing or join OSS projects.

We have Hacktoberfest each month!

You will always find ”good-first-pr” issues.

Try to understand issue descriptions and code review suggestions.
2/4

Don’t take them personally.

Take them as a piece of advice.

Good reviews and suggestions can teach you just as a mentor would!

Understand why your PR was rejected.

If it was accepted, and you got some nice words for it, look back to it as a reference.

A motivation.

Looking to improve your online presence as a developer?

Here are a few things you might want to look into

🧶
1. GitHub - Step 1

Make sure your demo projects are public.

Your best work is pinned to your profile, tightened up, and has a nice README and meaningful commit history.

When reviewing the applications and CVs of other engineers, these are one of the first things I look for. Image
2. GitHub - Step 2

Set up a CI for your project.

Chances are the company you're about to join uses CI/CD tools.

It doesn't have to be anything complicated:

If you have a TypeScript project, a CI that pulls the source code and runs tsc is perfectly sufficient! Image

5 rules I'm following while writing a blog post ✏️

Actionable tips you can use for your next article 💁‍♀️

A thread 🧵👇
1. Title is everything.

“The confused mind says no.”

I don’t know where I read that, but it’s true 💯
Easily digestible titles will have a much higher click-through rate than complicated ones.

Your article can be 🔥 if no one reads it.
2. Consider who you’re writing for to set the correct tone.

Before you start writing, determine who you’re writing for.

Does your audience consist of beginner devs or seasoned engineers?

Set the tone accordingly!

i.e., don’t explain basic stuff for an advanced crowd
