Been following the Budget since C.Subramaniam's budget in 1975.
No TV then, but I'd read the details in the newspaper with great interest.
Why?
I was still in high school, so why did it matter to me?
Cos it was the Govt telling us where public money was going.
That interested me.
Those Budgets would be very detailed and specific.
We were not a rich nation then, so an allocation of even 100 cr was a big deal then, and would attract attention.
Today the govt throws around numbers in lakhs of crores just like that - and no one bats an eyelid.
It's easy to announce schemes when no one is going to ask you any qns.
Forget new schemes, did anyone bother to check against schemes that you announced in the last Budget?
Is it even possible to check?
And, what is probably most likely in today's India, DOES ANYONE EVEN CARE?
When you have a sense of ownership over sth, you bother to check on it.
Whether it's your home, or your country's economics.
I suspect many are disengaging from the latter (unless their job depends on it).
As long as THEIR personal finance is ok, they couldn't care less.
I can see where they're coming from.
Tbh, I sometimes myself feel that way.
Not sure I have a sense of ownership anymore.
Am just mentally exhausted at all these schemes, lofty claims, unverifiable, possibly fudged numbers.
Where to even start?
The govt loves it if we don't care.
The more disengaged and indifferent we, the public, are, the more the govt will get away with looting us.
It collect so many lakhs of crores - imagine the scope for looting!
But ppl are more interested in the stock markets, and their portfolio, than questioning govt.
I know we have the CAG for govt audit, but I don't know how effective it is.
What I'd like is for ppl to show interest too.
Esp those who understand public finance well.
Maybe take ONE scheme and do a real deep dive into it.
See if you notice sth suspicious.

The Budget is supposed to be an important event.
The Finance Minister presenting the Budget to the People.
Ergo, in Parliament cos that's where the people's elected representatives sit.
It is supposed to be the day the Govt says "I took money from you, this is how I spent it".1/n
I know there are Appendices where one can look at Budget/Revised Estimates, Actuals etc.
But if you're going to refer ppl to documents anyway, might as well skip the whole Budget presentation exercise, no?
There's supposed to be DISCUSSION in Parliament on fin performance. 2/n
Why shd ppl not hear straight from the Fin Minister what was actually spent on which area, where there was a budget overrun - and why?
No need for great detail, but at least at a level that ppl feel informed.
Why bury this in detail in some "Appendix to the Budget" doc? 3/n

MANY requests out there for financial help for medical support.
Ads on Youtube & other platforms are also often abt this.
And though someone's suffering, we tend to "Skip Ads", cos there's only so much we can deal with.
Everyone has limited resources & other priorities.
1/n
Here's the thing.
At an individual level, we can only do so much.
We might be able to help a few people, but it's only a very small fraction of the people who need help.
Not saying we shouldn't help - but the real solution needs to be systemic and institutional. 2/n
There are different views on what this systemic and institutional support needs to be.
- Public healthcare (free, or heavily subsidised)
- Private healthcare with Insurance
- Mix of both

I leave it to the experts to comment, but we need to fix this pronto.

I've said this many times before.
Our politicians come from amongst us.
Not just the big names, but every MLA/MP.
It's only natural that they will imbibe in their character those values that are deeply embedded in our society.
Bigotry, patriarchy, casteism...and a lot more.
THESE are characteristics of our society.
Why would you expect our MLAs/MPs to be somehow immune to these?
Doodh ke dhuley?
And you'll find them in ALL parties.
BJP, Cong, AAP, TMC etc.
Now see what happens...
These MLAs/MPs give speeches and interviews all the time, so there's a VERY good chance, they WILL talk rubbish based on their regressive mindsets.
Immediately, those factions of the #HeSaidSheSaid gang that are from "other" parties will get hyper-active.
It'll be news du jour.

I get happiness from the following:
- ppl of different faiths enjoying a good time together, without the slightest hate amongst them, cos they realise humanity > religion
- a govt school, or a govt healthcare facility that even the privileged would proudly send their kids to.
I'd get happiness from the following:
- a society where everyone has at least a decent standard of living
- a society with a scientific temper
- a society which truly aspires to the values enshrined in the Preamble (Justice, Liberty, Equality of opportunity, Fraternity).
I'd probably get happiness from a lot more things too, but I shouldn't get too greedy, so this is my bouquet of wishes for now.

The thing is, I want ALL of these things.
Yes, some might eventually lead to others, but again they might not.
And I'm not willing to compromise.

Normal that party supporters indulge in hyperbole abt party leaders.
Using adjectives like "inspiring", "charismatic", "courageous", "compassionate", "honest" etc.
Even citing examples.

I ignore all this. :-)
Bottom line:
What good are you doing w/ the power your party has?
We need to be fair to a leader/party too.
You'll never find me blaming Rahul Gandhi for any wrong that Cong did before his time.
IIRC, he came into a leadership role in Cong only during UPA1.
To the extent he had power to influence sth, fair to ask him qns on it.
O/wise, unfair.
I've used Rahul Gandhi here only as an example.
Applies to anyone.
Even Modi.
Sure, you might hate him from the bottom of your heart, but if you blame him for sth that he had no power to influence/change, you're being unfair to him.
Accountability & Power go hand in hand.

"The Delhi govt runs 38 full-fledged hospitals across the city. Over the last two years, the govt has significantly improved conditions in these hospitals. The state has made all medicines, tests and surgeries at these hospitals completely free."
citizenmatters.in/delhi-assembly…
"If patients who are residents of Delhi are waitlisted for a life-threatening surgery at a Delhi govt hospital for more than 30 days, the hospital refers the patient to any of its 31 pvt centres and 57 empanelled pvt hospitals, which treats the patient for free within 15 days."
"For the first time, even expensive tests like CT scans and MRIs are being done for free."
Kejriwal:“We lay emphasis on health and edu, there will be no dearth of funds for this scheme.”
"The cost of these, for which no upper limit has been set, will be paid by the Delhi govt."
