Colman, who through her role in The Lost Daughter has been widely tipped for awards, was also a surprise omission from last year’s Bafta shortlist for her role opposite Anthony Hopkins in The Father

The 15-strong longlist for best film has been whittled down to five with Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast set to compete against Don’t Look Up, Dune, Licorice Pizza and The Power of the Dog

The overall winner in the nominations was Dune, adapted from Frank Herbert’s classic science-fiction novel and directed by Denis Villeneuve

It scored 11 shortlisted nominations with The Power of the Dog on eight and Belfast on six

The James Bond film No Time to Die received five nominations although Daniel Craig, in his swansong in the role, did not make the leap from leading actor longlist to shortlist

Amanda Berry, chief executive of Bafta, said the shortlist voting had produced a “real mix of global films with high budgets and indie films with a mixture of subject matters”

🏆She also highlighted that 19 of the 24 acting nominees were receiving their first Bafta nomination
