The NRA's revenue has HALVED since 2018, the high-water mark of the organization before it began its decline

A series of important stories from @StephenGutowski and The Reload this morning:

thereload.com/exclusive-nra-…
@StephenGutowski NRA also spending 20% of its expenses on legal fees, more than 10x what it spends on education/training/community engagement combined

One could argue that its morphed from a 2A org to one fighting desperately to keep Wayne LaPierre in power

thereload.com/exclusive-nra-…
@StephenGutowski Brian Mittendorf warns of an NRA death spiral:

"Drastic declines in spending on core operations create the potential for a revenue ‘death spiral’ in which cuts in core programs scare off members, which in turn necessitates further cuts... can be hard to reverse.”
@StephenGutowski There's also been widespread dismay about the state of the NRA's mismanagement within the 2A community.

And that's been reflected by internal financial docs which show the NRA's membership dipping to just over 4.5 million

thereload.com/internal-repor…
@StephenGutowski The NRA has also apparently misled the public about its membership in the past.

While the NRA has bragged about membership being "nearly 6 million," internal docs showt hat at its peak it reached somewhere between 5 and 5.5 million members

thereload.com/internal-repor…
@StephenGutowski There's been a longtime issue about whether the NRA is over-counting members -- there's very little in the public about whether there's a mechanism to remove deceased 'life members' from the membership list, for e.g.

Florida state health officer put on administrative leave for encouraging own public health employees to get vaccinated

“I am sorry but in the absence of reasonable and real reasons it is irresponsible not to be vaccinated,” he wrote

google.com/amp/s/www.orla…
“As the decision to get vaccinated is a personal medical choice that should be made free from coercion and mandates from employers, the employee in question has been placed on administrative leave" said an agency spokesperson
The state health officer, Dr. Raul Pino, is a Cuban refugee who started by picking blueberries in CT but earned his masters in public health

I really do like the lede here on this WaPo profile:

"Let's start with the beard. J.D. Vance didn't used to have one."

washingtonpost.com/magazine/2022/…
J.D. Vance seems to think his changing image is a part of being a more interesting person:

“The price of being beloved by the establishment is you don’t say anything interesting... Dominant elite society is boring, it is completely unreflective, and it is increasingly wrong."
This was combined with Vance being upset with the negative critical response to the movie 'Hillbilly Elegy,' based off his book

Over the holidays I was cleaning my apartment and came across an old Blackberry.

Powered it up out of curiosity and it was like a time capsule. Texts, emails and yes, tweets, frozen in time from 2011.

(and on Ubersocial, the twitter app -- remember that?)
What struck me especially is how much kinder, funnier, and insightful Twitter was a decade ago, compared to today.

Genuine conversations between people with opposing views.

And with less characters per tweet!
I've struggled over the past two years or so to find the value of Twitter -- other than to get my blood pressure up.

I've tweeted less, and read less too. Twitter used to be a kind of informal assignment editor: conversations/ideas/pitches all whirling around

Hard to imagine now, but just years ago the House Intelligence Committee was seen as one of the most bipartisan in Congress.

Nunes and Schiff once had a bromance! They jointly launched an investigation into Russian meddling into 2016 election!
That all changed when Nunes, who was traveling with a cmte aide, jumped out of an Uber and disappeared one night in 2017.

The next day Nunes gave a press conference, saying a whistleblower had given evidence of Trump wiretapping

I broke the story here:

thedailybeast.com/devin-nunes-va…
Nunes then rushed to the White House to brief the president.

It later came out that White House officials were the ones who gave Nunes the information. But it did stir up a lot of dust at the time around Trump's wiretapping allegations

Journalist Ian Urbina accused of using his NYT email after leaving the publication to solicit musicians for songs about the ocean, which he then published for personal gain

"The allegations are troubling," said a NYT spokesperson

inputmag.com/culture/ian-ur…
Benn Jordan, in a video, says that the former NYT reporter "creat[ed] a marketing scheme that resulted in him collecting the majority of royalties for an immense collection of music that he did not write."

Jordan claims that the work of 462 artists were accumulated by the former NYT reporter in this way, leading to hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners on Spotify for Ian -- who never wrote any music.

Former NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch has written a book for kids about the right to have guns

The book is titled 'Paws Off My Cannon' and features Bongo, a gorilla who enjoys cupcakes

foxbusiness.com/politics/new-d…
Fox on Loesch's book:

"when hyenas, armed with coconut cannons, come to steal the cupcakes, Bongo has to use a cannon of his own to chase them away. Half of the town wants to ban cannons, but Bongo insists on keeping his, and his heroism saves the day"
Loesch promoted her *children's* book by saying:

"We’ve seen rioting, looting, and assault — even murder — go unchecked... coddling criminals and reducing deterrents… tears our nation apart at the seams and people live in fear"
