For #BlackHistoryMonth I've compiled some resources on Black educators and Black history education. Please reply with any others that inspire you; this just scratches the surface and I'd love to check out yours! 1/10
First: @HendersonKaya's startup Reconstruction.us. Its live Zoom classes "show our kids that they are descendants of powerful, creative, and resilient ancestors whose contributions permeate every aspect of life across the globe." @NPR's story: npr.org/2021/02/25/964… 2/10
Edutopia.org writes about the experience "of most Black children today: mostly White teachers teaching Black history primarily in February." Instead, it should happen throughout the curriculum and with more cultural responsibility. edutopia.org/article/teachi… 3/10
A @USC article highlights our country's severely deficient education on Black history (e.g. a 2014 @splcenter study found 12 states had no educational requirement to teach about the civil rights movement, and only 3 states received an "A" grade for their focus on it) ... 4/10
... and goes on to share ways to prepare educators to do better.
The @USC article: rossier.usc.edu/magazine/fall-…
and for the @splcenter study: splcenter.org/news/2014/03/0…) 5/10
As a sad follow-up to the @USC piece, you've seen the recent push to limit education about racism and bias in many states (the anti-#CriticalRaceTheory movement). @Chalkbeat tracked efforts to restrict, as well as to expand, such education.
chalkbeat.org/22525983/map-c… 6/10
Consider attending the University of Wisconsin @UWMadisonPLACE Black History Education Conference, "I Am Somebody," online February 18-19. It features a keynote by @revjessejackso. $125 for educators, $50 for students, with scholarships available.
place.education.wisc.edu/k12-programs/b… 7/10
And finally, @selmekki of @CenterBlackEd has a video series on revolutionary Black educators that you should check out. thecenterblacked.org/black-educator… ... 8/10
... @selmekki says "that legacy of lifting as you climb, becoming a Black educator, educating your peers, your elders, the youth, has always been a central part of the Black American experience." @CenterBlackEd celebrates that legacy. 9/10
There are so many other resources and people out there to learn from and celebrate. If you've got great ones to add, please reply! 10/10
