The overt, overbearing and discriminating crap these sanghis pull in Indian schools would get them prosecuted, sued, penalized into bankruptcy in the United States. that's why they are so incensed at US universities starting to include caste under covered categories.
For right wingers, the definition of freedom is centered around the freedom to discriminate.
I'm not making this up. It's a firm belief in the US libertarian/conservative circle, repeated often by the likes of Rand Paul - "I don't discriminate & I won't go to a place that discriminates but govt/courts can't punish someone for discriminating cos that's anti-freedom."
That was something I always argued against even when I was in a staunch libertarian phase. That the Civil rights act was "anti freedom". Cos it gave govt5 institutions the right & the duty to punish someone for discrimination that can be proven in a court. Seemed fine to me. 🤷🏽♂️
If I don't discriminate and you don't discriminate and no one discriminates, then anti-discrimination laws will simply never have to be used.
Simple. How do CRA/VRA/EEOC etc infringe on freedom unless you think freedom to discriminate is a fundamental right?
This hijab based refusal of education, new to India, is just the start.
They've already cashed in the old polarizing issues like Kashmir, Babri, triple talaq, beef, inter faith marriages, conversion, etc. Your thought those "wins" would be the end? Not for them.
When the primary fuel for your political movement is aggrieved bigotry disguised as nationalism, you need to keep feeding that engine. So new fronts need to be opened up. Like ARRESTING people over a cricket match loss. Kicking students out over hijab.
More fronts will be opened
Because at the core of any right wing movement is the right to discriminate. It was so in the Civil War, Jim Crow, European fascism, hindutva, Bolsonaro, Brexit, Trumpism, Roganism etc.
This idea that the left is evil for refusing your right to discriminate indiscriminately.
There are twice as many ethnic Indians in the United States as there are in Goa. High time caste was added as a covered category in all anti-discrimination statutes across the country, not just universities.
History has shown that such bigotry fueled majoritarian movements can only be stopped when the people from the majority start speaking up louder and louder against bigotry. And fighting back. Emphatically.
Just like there's antifascism, we need antisanghism to save India.
They only question is, will India's privileged majority wake up before the current constitution is rendered completely irrelevant, as are the courts, because authoritarian majoritarian countries aren't exactly known for their jurisprudence.
Read the North Korean constitution.
You need a Lincoln to stand with a Douglass, an LBJ to stand with an MLK, a Gorbachev to stand with a Sakharov, a de Clerk to stand with a Mandela if you want to end authoritarian movements built on a fuel of continuous paranoia abs bigotry.

force a refresh
"My grandmother was shot 32 times and my father was blown to bits. I know this country more than you."
That emotion in his voice. Too often we forget that before becoming a politician, he was a kid & a youth who has faced more horrifying personal tragedies than we can imagine.
I wish Rahul, Priyanka, Sonia spoke up more in this vein.
Modi was so shook up and whiny and his cabinet so furious because his motorcade was stuck in traffic for 20 mins cos of last minute plan changes.
Imagine if his dad & grandma had died like it. He'd bring it up everyday!
Whether you're a Congress supporter or not, that line should bring a tear to your eye. Can you imagine that childhood? That he's still standing there in parliament, hardly any seats, giving it his all. Gotta tip your hat, no?
How would you describe the taste of an avocado to someone who's never had an avocado?
Thank you for your responses. Please keep them coming. I plan to use this thread in class today when I teach the marketing case "The Meteoric Rise of Avocados"
Fun fact. Avocados can be and generally used to be papaya sized. Making them difficult to really handle in bulk.
But then one tree owned by a farmer named Hass produced human fist sized avocados, which were easy to pack and transport and ripen.
Funny thing is when the speech started, some IT cell bros were going "lol Rahul talking in English cos he can't talk in Hindi" and then that petulant interruption happened and after that he slayed it in Hindi as if he had checked Twitter.
I started watching thinking I'll just watch a few minutes to get a general idea and then watch Netflix but before I knew it, 45 minutes had passed!
To people who send DM message requests for advice about US grad school or jobs,
I try to answer every single genuine request. But please keep your queries limited to business school questions.
I can't & shouldn't give advice to engineers & doctors about their grad paths.
I Was an engineer once. Technically still am I suppose.
But I know next to nothing about US engineering programs.
And I'm not a person who pretends to know the answer to a question just because it is asked of me if I don't know the answer.
I'll just reply with "I don't know".
American universities are HUGE! American faculty sizes are HUGE!
A typical American professor knows NOTHING about admission or reputation or job prospects of a program outside their own field. The ones who pretend to, you shouldn't listen to. Cos you're getting vaporware.
While this story is a bit giggle-inducing, please also let us note that it is horrifying and an example of the suffocating social mores in Indian higher education.
These are adult men & women being treated like criminals for being adult men & women.
Having taught American college students for 15 years now, it is especially infuriating to look back at my times as a student in college in India. How they treated us like absolute shit and we just took it. We just took it.
It's as if Hindus never ever lived in Israel and are thus not really a relevant factor in the Israel-Palestine equation, so Dhume the rich Indian Hindu tourist in Israel did not get a first hand experience of what Palestinians experience in Israel.
This is classic Dhume BTW.
He starts off with a convenient strawman that he can then write a whole column tearing down.
Straw man this time is suggesting that all or most activists who criticize Israel say it's unsafe to be bearded or brown in Israel. Eh? What? But Dhume.
Dhume knows that the complaints against Israel are not that brown bearded people are treated with suspicion in Israel. Why would they be? It's absurd.
But Dhume has a column deadline and no other ideas. So he decides to make that a thing.
