Thread (1/9)
This thread looks at the rather dismal list of candidates to succeed Johnson.
(2/9)
Sunak seems to be the ‘favourite,’ but he would be worse than Johnson for several reasons.

First, he played a key role in making sure that our COVID response was among the most damaging – both to health and to the economy – in the world.
99-percent.org/how-does-our-g…
(3/9)
Not only did he invent the COVID-enabling ‘Eat out to Help Out’ scheme, he actively involved maverick scientists in order to delay taking action against COVID.
99-percent.org/happy-new-year/
(4/9)
Economically, he has been equally disastrous – the choices he makes consistently favour the very wealthy and force normal people to stump up the cash.

Kwarteng, Patel, Raab, Skidmore and Truss, the authors of the book “Britannia Unchained,” made the unpatriotic claim that “The British are the worst idlers in the world.”

And Patel is leading the assault on democracy.

And we must not forget Gove and Javid, both of whom would like to get rid of the NHS as a comprehensive, universal service, free at the point of use and funded by progressive taxation.

(7/9)
In fact all of the contenders are market fundamentalists who believe that “laws are for the little people” whereas money is for the “grown-ups.”
99% of the population, in their minds, count as “little people.”

Fortunately, we don’t have to go down that route. But we need a democratic reset to change track.

Thread (1/10)
The Conservatives are still repeating the increasingly ludicrous claim that they have been "getting the big calls right."

As this thread shows, nothing could be further from the truth.
(2/10)
The biggest calls have been on the economy, on Brexit, on COVID and on the rule of law.

They have failed on every one.
(3/10)
On Brexit, they chose to pursue a ‘hard Brexit’ against all advice and with no mandate…

Three more reasons to get #JohnsonOut8 as quickly as possible
1. He has absolutely no remorse and genuinely believes he should be considered above the law

ft.com/content/9ca17c…
2. "Johnson is happy to sacrifice anyone – his allies, his compatriots and even his own MPs – in order to further or salvage his own career."

Then he seemed to confirm that Whips using intimidation and blackmail was the norm, not the exception.

Less than 12 months ago, Johnson seemed so impregnable that I was motivated to write this article

And now, the question of Johnson’s departure seems to be on of when rather than if.
This thread explores the consequences of a post-Johnson Tory party

When Johnson first put together his cabinet in 2019, I said,

“Just as Extinction Rebellion has pointed out that we are looking at a climate emergency, I believe that we are looking at a constitutional emergency.”

Thread (1/14)
With all the government is doing, it is hard to keep track of the big picture.

There is a real risk of the UK becoming the world’s first ‘formerly developed nation.’

The government has mishandled its three challenges

On COVID, almost alone among world governments, it has declared unconditional surrender to the virus.

Which will increase the likelihood of bodies piling high, especially among more deprived groups.
