People seemed to be hell bent on arguing that Lata Mangeshkar was the epitome of ‘Brahminical privilege’. When I highlighted that she wasn’t Brahmin, someone said you don’t have to be a Brahmin to benefit from it. Also said her maternal grandfather was a priest.
Whatever your opinion of hers might be, don’t make such stupid arguments. Lata comes from the Gomantak Maratha Samaj, the erstwhile Devadasi community from Goa. It is not rocket science to realise why someone paternal in her family would be an upper caste man.
If that is her access to Brahminical privilege, you are literally obfuscating histories of the community she hails from. Doesn’t matter if she ever claimed her association with the community or not.
Not a fan of her singing & her politics. But by associating her saffron politics with her UC grandfather (who literally abandoned the family) & calling it some Brahminical privilege, don’t erase the trials that Gomantak Maratha Samaj as a community has been put through.
