The film was ordinary, but Madan Mohan & Lata didi were together to create magic. Film sank.Songs will live forever. The story goes that #LataMangeshkar wept while recording this song. Check the first alaap, you will know why.Ahir Bhairav sung to perfection.
Generations will come and go but nobody will ever know how #LataMangeshkar sang this beauty in Maand. Jaidev made this incredibly difficult composition only for Didi. Dadra taal makes it even more complex and then every stanza has different tune.
And then Didi experimented with Maand again. This time she was 62 years old. Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Gulzar and Lata Didi created Lekin- a monument to Indian music. Kesariya Balam- don’t forget didi could do this in 1991. She had started singing in 1942
Pathos was Didi’s middle name. Nobody did pathos better than her. Virah ras was Lata Mangeshkar and Vice versa. C Ramachandra knew this. So he created virah ras for her that even pucca classical musicians found difficult to sing.
Some songs seem simple. They are composed simply of course but when Didi sang no song was ‘simple’. We have all sung this along with her but who can get the emotion and expression right except Didi.
Raj Kapoor and Lata didi were a formidable team. Right from Barsaat to Ram Teri Ganga maili, RK and Lata were inseparable. Who else could sing dream sequence like a dream except didi
Unlike what people think Didi didn’t survive for 5 decades on her extraordinary talent alone. She knew when sound changed and a new era was ushered which was every decade. So she transformed herself every decade. Check this from Madhumati in 1958.
Compare Aaja re pardesi (1958) to Uthaye ja unke sitam in 1949, and you will know how Lata Didi transformed herself every decade. Perfection remained, class remained, decency remained, sound changed.
ईश्वर सत्य है, सत्य ही शिव है, शिव ही सुन्दर है I don’t know what had possessed Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo when they composed this exquisite beauty in king of Raags - Darbari Kanada and then where did Didi take it with her singing.. .
The year was 1954. Love was meant to be eternal like Lataji’s voice. It never ended. This is how you whispered love. Quietly, slowly and forever. Aa Neel Gagan tale, pyar hum karein. - Didi and Hemant Kumar. What could go wrong.
1972 - Amar Prem - Did RD reserve his best for Didi .. Asha ji certainly thought so and said that in jest but it must be remembered that Didi sang RD’s first song and his last song. This song however is in a league of its own
I will end this thread with a song about which I have often said that if Didi had only sung this one song she would still be the greatest singers ever. Such is this beauty composed in gorgeous Raag Jaijaiwanti by Shankar Jaikishen. Pay attention to taans

Just heard @MahuaMoitra speech. Amongst the plethora of lies she peddled, I heard her saying ‘Govt replaced Urdu as first and official language of Jammu and Kashmir with Hindi”. Does Mahua know anything about J&K? Urdu is an imposition on people of J&K. Urdu is not our language.
And @MahuaMoitra, I invite you to read a few books and speak to few people from my state of J&K. Our languages are primarily Kashmiri, Dogri and many other languages and dialects. Urdu is not our language. Ask yourself why Urdu was imposed on us?
Think about this @MahuaMoitra in your state of Bengal, Urdu is imposed and you are forced to read, write and do your official work in Urdu. What will happen? Oh wait. Just look at Bangladesh and you will know what happens when languages not native to a place are imposed.
I have been thinking about @ShashiTharoor ‘s statement that post independence history was put to use in ‘nation-building’. I think this is perhaps the first time anybody from Congress or Congress ideology has accepted this fact. I applaud Shashi for his candidness.
This statement opens many layers of debate. Was history manipulated to employ it in the service of ‘nation-building’ as @ShashiTharoor describes it? Or was it manipulated to ‘buy’ peace? We’re we successful in buying peace? Whom were we negotiating ‘peace’ with?
The country had just been divided. Those who had wanted to divide the country had been successful. They had their own country. We were going through our own brutal Holocaust. Why were we still negotiating peace? Why were we manipulating history?
If anybody has any doubts about what India brings to the global stage, the brilliant speech PM @narendramodi just delivered at UNGA should serve as a blueprint of vision India has for herself and vision India has for the free world. #modiatUNGA#ModiInUSA
Most important message PM Modi delivered on the world stage is ‘Democracy has delivered and democracy can deliver’. Today India is a shining example of how democracy can deliver. #modiatUNGA#ModiInUSA
No one can accuse this India of sitting out of the arena as most commentators have accused India in the past.Just few days ago a celebrated western commentator of Indian origin said ‘India has no foreign policy’.Of course he will now have problem with ascendant India too :)
I don’t know if it is peer pressure or group think, probably both, but this criticism about #JallianwalaBagh is so unfounded and unfortunate. I have visited the massacre site. It was frankly a disgrace. Unkempt, dilapidated and not maintained at all.
It was hardly a memorial befitting innocent martyrs who were killed for simply existing. It was a disgrace that such a solemn site had turned into ruins. Of course we want to maintain the sanctity of the place, but we also want to keep it neat and clean.
One can have issues with sound and light show. I personally don’t like them but I do see how it can be useful to attract young kids. Music can be changed with constructive criticism, but as far as maintaining the massacre site and cleaning it up,there is zero reason to criticize.
Western publications love to caricature India. The seriousness and rigor of real journalism is always missing. If @TheAtlantic wanted to do a story on Hindi film industry, I wish they had approached a serious critic and not a cheap fellow whose ‘journalism’ is kiss and tell.
The disgruntled fellow may not know but serious readers of @TheAtlantic should know, India is a huge country. What your cheap fellow calls ‘Bollywood’- a pejorative term, is essentially Hindi film industry operating out of Mumbai. But that is not the only film industry in India
There is Telugu,Tamil, Malayali, Gujarati, Punjabi and tons of other cinema in India and thriving. Thank you.Coming to Hindi Cinema, this fellow’s only qualification in writing this piece is that he dated a film director who happens to be a protégé of another famous film director
Mamata is manufacturing controversies and artificial clashes with the Central government. Governance is her Achilles heel but she has ambitions and is unstable. These manufactured clashes help her rally her vote bank because in their mind she is ‘standing upto’ Modi.
Mamata knows she has a captive vote bank and in order to stay in power all she needs to do is keep them convinced she is ‘fighting’ against Modi. There is no need to deliver on ground if she can keep ‘clashing’ with Modi. For Mamata race to 2024 has begun.
Mamata is destroying institutions, politicizing bureaucracy, bringing about unprecedented Center-State crisis, only because she knows she will be forgiven for everything including destroying Bengal, if she pretends to be up against Delhi all the time.
