1/5 @jimmycarr's joke (and the laughter that followed) has reduced the death of 500,000 Roma and Sinti to a ‘laughing’ matter.
It revealed the depth of anti-Roma hatred, prejudice and discrimination – the last ‘acceptable’ form of racism that still exists today.
Our statement:
2/5 The persecution of Roma by the Nazi regime remains widely unknown:
- Germany has only recognized the genocide against Roma in 1982.
- The EU voted in recognition of the WWII genocide against Roma in April 2015.

3/5 In the UK, the @HMD_UK gathers and shares resources reflecting experiences of Roma during the Nazi period. Read here Baronita's Adam story: hmd.org.uk/resource/baron…
4/5 Our Oral History Project shares experiences of UK's Roma, including those during the WWII.
Interview extracts and learning resources are available here: romaoralhistory.com
5/5 Prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination against our people remains widely spread in today's society. Romaphobia, Anti-Gypsyism - the last acceptable form of racism is what encouraged people like @jimmycarr to think it is ok to make jokes like these. Needs to be addressed!
