The comedian has been widely criticised for a gag made in his Netflix special His Dark Material, after Traveller and Roma charities flagged the joke on social media.
In the special, Carr says people ‘never mention the thousands of Gypsies that were killed by the Nazis’ in the Holocaust, because ‘no one ever wants to talk about the positives’.
Mr Johnson’s spokesperson said:
‘Obviously, those comments are deeply disturbing and it is unacceptable to make light of genocide.'
Asked if Netflix should remove the special entirely, the spokesperson added, according to The Independent: ‘That would be a matter for them.'
‘We are clear that mocking the atrocities of the Holocaust is unacceptable.’
However, they stressed the PM is looking into ‘toughening measures for social media and streaming platforms which don’t tackle harmful content on their platforms.’
‘We are looking at regulatory changes for streaming companies. We are clear that any change in legislation needs to be proportionate, to ensure freedom of speech within the law is not stifled,’ they continued.
Mr Sajid Javid said the joke was ‘horrid’.
‘I think we all have a right to react to that, & one of the best ways anyone can react to that is show these platforms what they think about Jimmy Carr by not watching or listening to him, and that will send him a very strong message.'
Carr spoke out about the controversy during his headlining show at Whitley Bay Playhouse on Saturday, where Carr is reportedly said to have told the audience:
‘The joke that ends my career is already out there,’ and, ‘I am going to get cancelled, that’s the bad news.’
The new container sees the liquid dispensed from the bottom, meaning we will no longer have to carefully balance the bottle on its narrow red lid to get the last dregs out 👏
To mark the occasion, Fairy has unveiled a gallery of images showing how the design has evolved since the first bottle in 1960.
It is believed that Carrie has grown weary of the mounting pressure on her family brought on by the steady stream of allegations of Covid rule-breaking within Downing Street during lockdowns.
Despite repeated calls from both his own MPs and opposition members, the PM has insisted he is intent on continuing in post.
But The Sunday Times, citing three different sources, reported that Carrie would now rather he left – although she has not urged her husband to resign.
‘She was saying she had had enough a couple of weeks ago. She was telling friends the pressure on her was too much and she’d be happier if he left,’ a source said.
