We researched some of the biggest Facebook groups promoting the Canadian trucker protest before they were shut down yesterday, and noticed something was a bit off.
The only individual admin running some of the most active groups was one woman in Missouri. Or so it seemed.🧵⤵️
The woman's years-old Facebook account had no real history of political activity until January 2022, when it suddenly posted a fundraiser for Donald Trump.
Below the post was a comment from the woman's daughter:
"I like how you hacked my moms shit but you won't answer my dm."
I called the woman on her publicly listed number, and she said her account had been hacked.
The stolen account was administering a collection Facebook groups started between Jan. 26 and Jan. 28 that had amassed more than 300,000 followers that had 7,500 posts.
.@twiceanya, @benjaminopowers and I looked into the role disinformation, social media and suspicious online activity are playing in the events unfolding on the streets of Ottawa.
Its parent company, @Meta, mentioned "scammers" in media statements about the removal of Freedom Convoy groups — but did not address groups run by operators hiding behind a hacked personal Facebook account.
We're continuing to follow this story at @gridnews.
Please follow my colleagues @twiceanya & @benjaminopowers and feel free to shoot us an email or DM if you have tips or leads for us to follow.
Here are some notes on even more curious behavior on "Freedom Convoy" Facebook groups that are still active.
I'm here at the E. Barry Prettyman Courthouse in D.C. preparing to cover a 10 a.m. hearing regarding Special Counsel Jack Smith's motion for a partial gag order on former President Trump.
Trump is not expected to be present today. But at least one of his allies is — Rep. Marjorie Tayor Greene was amid the members of the public in line to enter the courtroom a few moments ago.
Good morning to some of the new followers @KlasfeldReports has kindly sent my way! I'm not as skilled+experienced at livetweeting proceedings but may try to post some updates periodically once we're underway.
NEW: Ron DeSantis now says he "rejected the political leftism" he found at Harvard and Yale.
But in a little-examined period of his life shortly before entering politics, DeSantis co-founded a test prep firm and spoke glowingly about elite institutions. themessenger.com/politics/ron-d…
I examined the period between DeSantis' honorable discharge from active duty Navy service in 2010, and his 2012 Congressional run by looking at website archives, YouTube videos with only a handful of views, financial disclosure forms and other records.
DeSantis co-founded the company, LSAT Freedom, with two Harvard Law School classmates, and the company put the Harvard brand front and center on its website and in promotional material.
Worth a closer look at this part of the DOJ memo to Barr recommending not to charge Trump with obstruction:
"The [Mueller] Report makes clear that the President equated a witness's decision to 'flip' with being induced by prosecutors to manufacture false evidence against others"
The Mueller Report says Trump — in his statements dangling a pardon for Paul Manafort — was making it clear that he "did not want Manafort to 'flip' and cooperate with the government." (Volume II, p. 131)
As summarized on the next page:
"Evidence concerning the President’s conduct towards Manafort indicates that the President intended to encourage Manafort to not cooperate with the government." (Volume II, p. 132)
Many of the statements on student loan forgiveness you'll read today will be written by Congressional staffers whose student loans were repaid by taxpayers under 2 U.S.C. § 4536 — which established a program specifically to repay student loans for House employees.
New filing in Mar-a-Lago docket: DOJ asks court to deny motions by media and others to unseal the search warrant affidavit.
But DOJ does not object to unsealing cover sheets, government's motion to seal, and court's sealing order.
DOJ says of affidavit: "the redactions necessary to mitigate harms to the integrity of the investigation would be so extensive as to render the remaining unsealed text devoid of meaningful content, and the release of such a redacted version would not serve any public interest"
These the criminal statutes the Mar-a-Lago search warrant was issued in relation to a violation of, according to a copy of the warrant obtained by Breitbart:
