THE ANATOMY OF A DART

A dart is a fold of fabric sewn to take in extra fabric in order to tailor a garment to the individual figure.
We'll be looking at the components of a dart.
APEX
This is the highest point of the dart, It is the starting point for rotating the dart. It is also the bust point in a bodice front.
DART POINT
This is about 3/4" to 1" away from the bust apex or bust point. This is where the dart starts.
DART LEGS
These are the two legs that make up the triangle of a dart. These two legs are stitched together when sewing a dart on a garment.
DART INTAKE
This is the space between the two dart legs. This is what determines the volume of the fabric to take in when sewing a dart.
DART FOLD
This is the centre of the dart and it indicates the folded part of the dart when it is stitched.
PUNCH HOLE
This is a hole punch about 1.5" away from the apex that indicates where to stop stitching the dart.
You stop stitching your dart 0.5" over the punch hole to cover up the hole.

Once you have tested your blocks and you are satisfied with the fit.
The next thing is to keep it safe and reuse every time you have a new project.
