#Meta is threatening to shut down Facebook & Insta in Europe in a battle with regulators. Will the EU blink? Not if they’re listening to public opinion. New @MiC_Global polling across Europe suggests public back EU clamping down on social media. Here’s what they say…Thread 1/8
Far from taking Meta’s side the opposite is true - asked about government regulation of Facebook, TikTok and YouTube, almost one in two (46%) say the government is either “not doing enough” or “not doing nearly enough” 2/8
We asked “which of the following issues do you think government should do more to address, if any”? Top concerns on average are: hate speech and violence (52%), scams (51%), and misinformation or fake news (48%). 3/8
Support for regulation cuts across generations, with older Europeans generally even more in favor. But younger people (18-29) who use social media most are twice as likely (32%) to prioritize the mental health impacts of social media. 4/8
Beyond regulation, many people think turning off Facebook would be no bad thing. In France, 65% are in favor of “prohibiting access to social media for children under 16” rather than 13+ now. Close to half (45%) of French 18-24 year olds support total ban for the under 16s. 5/8
And there are almost no strong opponents of the ban for under 16s: just 6% of French adults say they would “definitely not” support a ban for children. 6/8
That feeling extends to the UK too. Where just 10% say Facebook is a force for good, while 45% of people say it is a “force for bad”. 7/8
This is drawn from a soon to be published report by More in Common with @YouGov based on polling conducted in Nov and Dec 2021 on a 12,000 person sample in the UK, FR, DE, PL, IT, SP. End 8/8
