Clause 9 will make it possible for the Home Secretary to deprive people of citizenship *without notifying them*. This is the most recent sinister development in the ramping-up of the government's powers to deprive citizenship over the last 20 years.
Depriving someone of their citizenship strips them of their identity and rights, often in the only place they have ever called home. It's been described as “worse than torture”. Here @NosheenIqbal gives more background to the UK's use of these powers: theguardian.com/news/audio/202…
The powers strengthened in the #BordersBill turn people with heritage in countries outside the UK into second-class citizens. The #SayNoToClause9 campaign is about making clear the wide ranging implications of this - it may affect 6 million people.
Here @JuliaRampenMM explains that while this law applies to her, as a white Canadian she's unlikely to be impacted. Like most racist Hostile Environment policies, Black and brown people are most likely to be wrongfully deprived of their citizenship.
We hope the #SayNoToClause9 campaign and the media attention the Clause has received will bring attention to the many other cruel and dehumanising aspects of the #BordersBill, which fundamentally attacks the right to seek safety in the UK.
