1/ The Dangers of Critical Race Theory's Colonization of Music Education🧵

For those of you who like myself, who are worried about SEL as a CRT delivery mechanism, may I present a far more pernicious delivery mechanism for CRT ideology & activism: Music and Music Education.

2/ Dr. Juliet Hess is a teacher of teachers at Michigan State,one of the largest music education programs in the country. Dr. Hess has made it clear that her goal is not to teach futures teachers how to instruct students how to read music or play their instrument

3/ Instead, by employing Critical Race Theory praxis, Dr. Hess teaches her future teachers that such expectations are examples of "whiteness" or "white supremacy." Through this, she teaches that the practice of basic musical concepts and fundamentals is "white supremacy."

4/ Using CRT to attack the "whiteness"in music education, she explicitly seeks to lower standards of admission to collegiate music education programs in an effort to replace competent musician-teachers with ideological activists who will use music to politically activate students

5/ Dr. Hess and the woke left understand the cultural power of music and music education as a delivery mechanism for their radical message. Even more than techniques like SEL, music is ubiquitous in our lives and culture and is already in almost every K-12 school.

6/ As a society, we have often put music and music education on the cultural back bench, in favor of sports and stem focuses. But I promise you this, if we continue to ignore the radicalization of music education, it will serve as the tip of the spear of our collective undoing.

7/ This is why I am starting an organization to reestablish the integrity of music education in schools and universities: The Revive Music Education Initiative.

I am searching for likeminded music educators and scholars to help me develop and fund this organization.

8/We are in the very beginning stages, but @ReviveMusicEd will be committed to restoring the true purpose of organized music education in the United States - to instill in students a love for the discipline of music, free from inherently divisive politically motivated dogma.
