Tonight marks the 40th anniversary of the Ocean Ranger tragedy, when the lives of its 84 crew members were all lost as the Hibernia platform succumbed to large waves and powerful winds. We are sharing some weather charts and maps in commemoration of the historic storm.
Here is the hand drawn surface map from the old Newfoundland Weather Office in Gander, showing the centre of the storm tracking northeast of the island. 2/4 #NLwx
The minimum barometric pressure recorded at St. John's was 951 mb. We can see that the barograph trace had to be manually adjusted upward, as the pressure fell off the bottom of the scale on the chart.
Satellite images were not of the same quality as those we receive today, but nonetheless, they still showed the signature of a large and intense storm!
