"Clad in a long flowing robe of black and a large white turban, P. Ramanathan, the religious leader of the Hindoo population of the Island of Ceylon, arrived in New York Saturday on the steamer Campania. "He is here to convert Americans to Hindooism"
"While intensely interested in religion, Mr. Ramanathan is prominent politically and is solicitor general of Ceylon. By his visit to this country he hopes to do much toward bringing about a better understanding religiously between the east and the west"
"He has devoted his life to the study of the Bible, and was the first to translate the Scriptures into his native tongue. His visit to this country was inspired by the belief in the necessity of a 'unity of religion.'"
"'India has often been visited by missionaries from America,' Mr. Ramanathan said, 'but they have accomplished little. One reason for their failure is that most of the missionaries use their resources to gain political power'"
"To bring about this 'unity of religion' Mr. Ramanathan intends to spend from eight to ten months in this country, devoting all of this time to teaching Hindooism"
"Mr. Ramanathan belongs to one of the oldest families of southern India. They possessed considerably wealth and he himself has acquired a large fortune. He will spend the summer at Green Acre, Eliot, Me."
