/ “…there is a long history of hatred behind that as a symbol. If you don't know why you're flying the flag, you'd better do your research before you come across as a bigot or someone who is perpetuating hate." #ldnont
/ Perhaps those who raised the flag didn’t know what they were doing. Or, maybe they did. Either way, there’s much work left to do to ensure all citizens in our city feel that they belong and are valued.
/ Let’s not allow those who wish to divide us the opportunity to have their way. When we hear racism, we must speak up. When we see racism - and the symbols that perpetuate it - we must speak up. This is the least one can do and all of us have a role to play.
/ As we have seen over the past few weeks, Canadian democracy and the values that underpin it are not to be taken for granted. Racism disguised as free speech has nothing it to do with freedom and everything to do with hate.
/ All of us have a choice to make. Will indifference be the response to the hate of the alt-right that expressed itself so often on the streets of Ottawa? Or, will we use this as a learning opportunity and seek to make our country better? The answer will define Canada’s future.
