In 1988, as Parliament was studying the bill, Emergencies Act, MPs spent a great deal of time defining the term “national emergency.” In the end, Parliament set forth exacting criteria, it was hoped, prevent the invocation of the legislation in all but the gravest of situations
The reasons advanced this week by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government meet none of those benchmarks.
As I write this, police are in the process of clearing the streets of downtown Ottawa. Although this action has little to do with the Emergencies Act, the Liberals will claim victory. However, history will remember that, in order to look tough, they disregarded their principles.
Despite the Liberal government’s efforts to paint the current events with the most dramatic colours, it has become patently clear that we are not faced with a “national emergency,” as defined by the Emergencies Act.
The seriousness of today’s events is not at all comparable to what happened in 1970. Neither are the risks of abuse under the current Emergencies Act, but risks do exist.

“A police operation is expected to take place on Wellington Street and other locations in the downtown core of Ottawa,” Speaker Anthony Rota warned in an email to parliamentarians Friday morning. Given these exceptional circumstances the sitting today is cancelled @liberal_party
OTTAWA – The House of Commons will not be sitting on Friday and parliamentarians are exhorted to avoid downtown Ottawa due to a police operation to remove Freedom Convoy protestors throughout the day. @liberal_party@NDP NO DIALOGUE JUST NAME CALLING
The only reason the act was invoked was to make JT feel like a man. Its been a peaceful protest up till now so what happens is really on JT's head and the rest that back this act up @liberal_party@NDP NO DIALOGUE JUST NAME CALLING
You live in La La Land. What's the weather like there?
My goodness their is no help for you.
When is the NDP going to stand up and say enough. No more support for a communist style government. @CanadianPM@NDP@OntarioNDP@LiberalQuebec
When they invoked the Emergencies Act on Monday, the Trudeau government made clear that they were not just going after the crowdfunding of Freedom Convoy organizers but would also target individual bank accounts.
“A lot of folks said, ‘I just don’t like your vaccine mandates and I donated to this, now it’s illegal, should I be worried that the bank can freeze my account?’” Evan Solomon, host of CTV’s Power Play, asked Lametti.
Lametti the weasel, out of his hole in the ground to pontificate to all true Canadians, about Trump. Get some counselling for your TDS. Butts is trying pretty hard, to invoke some kind of revolution here in Canada; he writes the "play" and Trudeau and Freeland are the "stars".
Good grief people, you have woken the "krakens" and Canadians are not impressed. What about the "cyber crime" committed here Lametti you dirt bag. A sign of absolute insane desperation when they bring out the Trump card @OmarAlghabra@HonAhmedHussen@DavidLametti@melaniejoly
Let's remember that Trudeau most admires the dictatorship of China and he is achieving his goal- he will decide what is acceptable. Always follow the money and in this regard, ban all foreign (south of the Border) money (in the billions) to Canadian foundations Trudeau foundation
Now the cops are arresting them but its a huge waste of time and money because they will go to court and likely get off because what they were doing was legal not illegal....this government needs to go ASAP @CPC_HQ@CandiceBergenMP@GGCanada
Amazing how they deflect public opinion by labeling it a 'Pro-Trump' protest, rather than calling it what it really is. An 'Anti-Trudeau and His Tyrannical Policies' protest. @CPC_HQ@CandiceBergenMP@GGCanada
These “police” should be ashamed of themselves. Wrong side of history to be on, arresting peaceful protestors because Castro told you so, smh. @OttawaPolice@OmarAlghabra
A day after the Canadian PM Trudeau invoked rarely-used emergency powers to curb the ongoing truckers protest, author Gad Saad has asked the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi whether he could be accommodated in India as he is looking to leave Canada to escape the dictatorship
