Ukrainian President Zelensky speaking now in Munich. He says Ukraine will defend itself with or without help, whether allies give helmets (Germany) or weapons (US, UK, etc).
Zelensky says "the security architecture in Europe is broken. It’s time for a new one."

He says of the current Russia threat, "This isn't about war in Ukraine. This is about war in Europe."
On NATO: "We are told the doors are open but that we are not allowed."

Zelensky says after years of dodging the question it's time for an answer as to whether Ukraine can be welcomed in NATO.
Zelensky mentions the escalation in the Donbas and massive shelling there in recent days, which I heard myself on the frontline in Mariinka yesterday.
Zelensky says we are ready to look for the keys to end the war in any format of negotiations. It doesn't matter where in the world we will agree on peace to end war in Ukraine. What is important is the understanding that it's not only us who needs peace, world needs peace.
Zelensky on US intel vs Ukrainian: The intel I trust is mine. I trust Ukrainians who understand what's going on in our borders. We're not living in delusion, we understand what can happen. But putting ourselves in coffins & waiting for Russian troop is now what we're going to do.
Zelensky continued: We aren't going to live in a state of expecting war tomorrow. How can we live if we think everyday the offensive will happen?
Zelensky the comic comes back out for a moment. "Wait a second. Cyberattack," he says as his translation piece drops out. "See the Russians are here," he says. A few chuckles from the audience.
Clarifying Zelensky's quip: "The Russians are not here but they're here."
Zelensky asked if was afraid to come to Munich. "No," he says. "I'm sure our country is in good hands. These are not just my hands, these are the hands of my soldiers and citizens."

"I had breakfast in Ukraine and I'll have dinner in Ukraine, as well."
One big thing Zelensky said. He called on the West to sanction Russia now if they're so sure Putin will invade. He said they won't do much good if Russian troops are in the country, the borders are compromised, the economy is in the tank. "Why would we need sanctions then?"

Wow. This extraordinary Russian Security Council meeting is absolutely bonkers and does give you the sense Putin’s lost his mind. Seems we’re close to Russia actually recognizing Donetsk and Luhansk “people’s republics” as independent and Moscow officially sending troops to help. Image
Also, recognizing Donetsk and Luhansk as independent here and officially helping militarily will mean the end of the Minsk agreements. The situation on the ground from there can change rapidly and significantly.
Dmitry Medvedev speaking now, says Donetsk and Luhansk "people's republics" are "territories that Ukraine does not need" and that Zelensky doesn't want to reintegrate because he would like to be reelected and the voters of Donetsk and Luhansk would not vote for him.

My latest report from eastern Ukraine: Russia Is Working Overtime To Spread False Reports That It Might Use To Justify Invading Ukraine buzzfeednews.com/article/christ… via @BuzzFeedNews with @Kiehart photos 📸
@BuzzFeedNews @Kiehart While many of Russia’s attempts to conduct false flag operations and spread incendiary (dis)information are bumbling and easily proven false, the reports could provide the pretext President Vladimir Putin is seeking to attack Ukraine. buzzfeednews.com/article/christ…
“We’re seeing old images misattributed, cut-and-dry fakes, and evidence that Russian proxies are staging attacks, not to mention reports of attacks that never took place,” disinfo buster @wiczipedia told me. buzzfeednews.com/article/christ…

President Zelensky says he will still go to Munich today for the security conference but will return to Ukraine right after his appearance. His office told me yesterday he was considering staying put in Kyiv. Biden said it was Zelensky's decision but probably best to not go.
Here's the statement from Zelensky's office on the president's decision to go to the Munich Security Conference even as hostilities escalate in the Donbas and the threat of a Russian invasion increases dramatically. president.gov.ua/news/shodo-uch…
And here is Zelensky tweeting from Munich with Boris Johnson. He’s meant to fly back to Kyiv immediately after meetings.

Biden speaking now describes Russia's aggression against Ukraine as a "rapidly escalating situation" and says "we believe they will target Ukraine's capital of Kyiv." He belives an attack will happen "in the coming days."
As for false Russian reports of Ukraine planning an offensive: It defies basic logic that the Urkainians would want to invade the Donbas while Russia builds up its forces around its borders, Biden says. He adds: It's consistent with the playbook Russia's used before.
Biden says Zelensky going to Munich is "his decision." Zelensky's press secretary told @BuzzFeedNews that the Ukrainian president was still planning on going to Munich Saturday but was "monitoring the situation."

👀 Donning military garb instead of his trademark shiny blue suit, Russia’s proxy leader in Donetsk says he has ordered a mass evacuation of residents to Russian Rostov Oblast. He claims “Zelensky will soon order an offensive in the Donbas.” (That couldn’t be further from truth.)
RT/Russia Today top editor says Pushilin wrote her saying Ukraine forces “are lined up in battle formations. If they haven’t received the order [to attack] yet, they will soon.” 🙄 I have been on the Ukrainian front today; no such thing happening. Just shelling from Russia’s side
Ukraine’s foreign minister on the obviously false allegation that Ukrainian forces are preparing an offensive in the Donbas.

Russia-backed forces shelled the music room of a kindergarten in far-eastern Stanytsia Luhanska, Luhansk region, at 9am this morning, according to local reports, local city admin, & NGO Proliska. Children were present but unharmed. Two teachers said to have suffered concussions.
The shelling comes amid a flurry of reports today from Russian state media & local Moscow-backed separatists on Telegram of Ukrainian shelling and provocations — none of which have been confirmed. The concern is that these may create a pretext for Moscow to launch a new attack.
Kyiv, the US, NATO, and Western governments have been warning for weeks and increasingly in recent days that Russia could stage "false flag" attacks to justify a new invasion of Ukraine. There is of course precedent for this in this eight-year war.
