Yesterday, @jadler0 took the stage at @ethereumDenver to talk about "Secure Off-chain Data Availability for Rollups".

"A monolithic blockchain, in its base consensus layer, does data availability, settlement and execution, and usually settlement and execution are tied together."

What's the problem with monolithic blockchains? "The problem is that if you do all these things at the base layer, you're doing a bunch of work, and that work limits the capacity of the system. It limits the total throughput." ~@jadler0

To solve the problem, "many blockchains are now moving towards the modular blockchain paradigm, where the base consensus layer only does data availability, making the transaction data available, but doesn't execute it."

"The reason why this model is so good is because now the base consensus layer doesn't have to be burdened with settlement and execution. It can just focus on data availability, therefore it can provide a much higher capacity of data availability by specializing."

What is Celestia? "Celestia is the first modular blockchain network." By decoupling consensus from execution, Celestia enables anyone to easily deploy their own blockchain, without the overhead of bootstrapping a new consensus network.

What is Celestium? "Celestiums take the best of the worlds, Celestia and Ethereum, and brings them together, synergistically." A Celestium is an Ethereum L2 chain that uses Celestia for data availability, but uses Ethereum for settlement and dispute resolution.

Celestia’s data availability bridge contract, the Quantum Gravity Bridge, will sit on Ethereum.
