I wrote about The Atlantic & its selective Concern For The Children. In the past year theyve published 33 articles lamenting covid protocols' effects on kids, but only 3 about the sunsetting of a child tax credit that just threw 3.7M kids back into poverty thecolumn.substack.com/p/the-atlantic…
Just a reminder there is no doubt thousands of voters who have become despondent with dems over their inability to extend the child tax credit, provide free childcare and myriad of other social programs. But we will almost never see them write essays in NYT, Atlantic, Politico
only purple county, rich voters upset with dems over policies **from the right**—“woke” issues, covid protocols, “defund,” etc are given these major platforms. These voices are constantly centered giving people the impression this is the only “lost” voters we ought to worry about
Further from god’s light etc, theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

amazing dems are arguing the social services side of “defund” has been tried at all. California liberals love to act like they’re Norway because they throw a few billion at something & move on. Breathtakingly cynical. Inequality & poverty are entrenched & extreme in this country
And of course this empirical standard is never met by carceralism. The US remains the most caged population on earth and **it’s not even close** and yet has one of the highest murder rates in the world and has for decades even after it dropped. Why? How has this system worked?
Why is the burden never on the caging people advocates? Why is this failed system of decades of locking up millions of faceless black and brown people always assumed to be the default and obvious good despite it being totally out of whack with any global standard or norm?

Another report showing horrors of US’s brutal, gratuitous sanctions on Afghanistan w/ only passing mention of US’s role in freezing govt money. The report ends by saying US has given $700m in “humanitarian aid”.

The suffering has no specific author—the US is largely a bystander
It’s obviously good reporters travel to and report on the suffering in Afghanistan’s but absent naming a specific party to lobby (the Biden WH, Congress) it runs the distinct risk of “oh dearism” or, worse, emotional pornography.
What is the moral utility of documenting suffering if we’re not told who is causing it? Who we can lobby to alleviate this suffering? What is the political action the viewer is called to do? Who is the party who can effect change?

It should go without saying but “we shouldn’t have US troops in Ukraine, they should be home defending the American border” is not an anti war sentiment, it’s a white nationalist talking point that simply displaces American violence to a different geographic location and people
One value paleoconservatives and libertarians serve is offering up nominal antiwar opinions to suck up media oxygen. This serves US elite consensus-making by painting opposition to US meddling and war as a white nationalist position. This was common in the run up to the Iraq war
Principled anti-war voices on the left were basically not seen in US media in the lead up to the Iraq war; the role of antiwar position was either liberal process critics (give inspections more time!) or Pat Buchanan types.

I think people would be more open to the “free speech, we have to be able to debate all ideas” line if 99% of those pushing it didn’t devolve into bog standard anti PC college kids Republican dudes like 9 months later
I think a lot of people have identified it as a stalking horse for not unreasonable pattern recognizing reasons. 30 years of “just asking questions, open inquiry, free speech also I really believe in Race Science” Lucy and football shit has made people justifiability cynical!
“We need to open up space to debate this position I don’t personally believe except that in about 1.5 years I will openly be arguing for it actually tbqh”

one point of clarification I think its worth noting is that the Biden admin isn't being influenced by Leonhardt as much as Leonhardt is operating as a PR guy for the Biden admin, Zients and the broader capital-driven bipartisan covid consensus of Back to Normal No Matter What
Obviously there can be a bit of a feed back loop but the causation of "hack explainer guy serves the emerging Washington and Chamber of Commerce consensus" is important because the other way around assumes bumbling good faith and tail wagging the dog naiveté
Remember, in 2018 the then-NYT opinion page editor explicitly said the NYT was "pro-capitalism. The New York Times is in favor of capitalism". It's not some hidden ideological dark matter one must infer, they're quiet open about it. fair.org/home/top-nyt-e…

Tucker is dogshit because he’s a white nationalist who incites violence against unhoused, black & trans ppl, immigrants, but this high-minded “anti authoritarian” schtick is rich coming from CNN which runs undisclosed, paid commercials for an absolute dictatorship. You both suck!
