#InvasionByOtherMeans
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree recognising the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic and the Lugansk People's Republic in Donbass as independent, avoiding a direct invasion of Ukraine but justifying occupation. Image
Putin strategy over Ukraine:
Putin signed a decree recognising two separatist-controlled regions in Ukraine, a provocative move as fears of an invasion mount, or a move that amounts to justifying an invasion by other means.
This means that Putin has put on hold a large-scale invasion to use a phased occupation of Ukraine which he claims belongs to Russia by virtue of being part of the old and now defunct Soviet empire that he seeks to nostalgiacally revive to boost his international reputation.
United States President Joe Biden has agreed in principle to meet with Putin, as long as Russia does not further invade Ukraine, the White House said, while it warned of a swift and decisive action if the Kremlim invades Ukraine.
The potential Biden-Putin summit, which would occur after the US Secretary of State and Russian Foreign Minister meet on Thursday, comes amid renewed US warnings that war is imminent.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned Russia is planning "the biggest war in Europe since 1945."

Former Zimbabwean deputy prime minister Arthur Mutambara says while war must be avoided, it was Western leaders' failure to listen, understand and resolve Russia's security fears over Nato expansion to its borders and their empty threats that made Ukraine's invasion inevitable. Image
"We do not want war. We should do all we can to avoid war," Mutambara said.
"Unfortunately, given the failure by Western leaders to understand and resolve Russia’s concerns and the pitiful folly of their empty and ineffectual threats, the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 was inevitable."

A row has erupted between the Zimbabwean government and some concerned citizens over authorities' dilatory approach to rescuing about 200 students stranded in Ukraine after Russia invaded its neighbour today amid fire, blasts and chaos as people tried to scamper away for safety. Image
"The government wishes to assure its citizens that it is seized with the developments in Ukraine. Our embassy in Germany is already in touch with most of our students in Ukraine and is currently working towards assisting its nationals based in that country," Foreign Affairs said.
However, critics say this response is tardy and not reassuring.
"Based on verifiable reports from Ukraine, you've asked the over 200 Zim students there to register in a WhatsApp group you've setup; and to evacuate themselves to Poland. Seriously?," Professor Jonathan Moyo said.

Nine armed robbers were killed today in Gaborone, Botswana, after a fierce exchange of fire with police following an armed robbery involving a cash-in-transit vehicle carrying about P1 million by 11 men, who apparently include two Zimbabweans based in South Africa, at Main Mall. ImageImage
Although Botswana police say the robbers were from Botswana and South Africa, The NewsHawks has been told that two of those armed marauders who had South African identity cards were actually from Zimbabwe.
This follows the shooting and killing of 10 armed robbers and arrest of many others from South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, on Monday in a foiled cash-in-transit heist.

At one time Zimbabwe became a laughing stock in some places when the late former president Robert Mugabe clung onto power seemingly forever as he prepared before the 2017 coup to run for another term in 2018 at 95 in a government in which geriatrics and their cronies held sway.
Although President Emmerson Mnangagwa is younger compared to Mugabe, he belongs to that old generation which has failed the country, but doesn't want to quit power.
Zimbabwe has only had two leaders in 42 years, making it an example of a country in the region in which democratic culture, traditions and practice just don't exist in substance beyond form and symbolism.

#UkraineCrisis
Why should people care?
First, it will lead to bloodshed and loss of lives.
Second, oil prices surged nearly 5% - almost US$100 a barrel-after Russian President Vladimir Putin recognised the secession of two Ukraine regions, raising fears of full-scale invasion. Image
Russia is a major energy producer and the tensions over Ukraine have brought wide swings in volatile energy prices — on top of the inevitable risks of a broader conflict which would pull down economic activity across Europe and globally, including in Africa, Zimbabwe included.
The international crude oil benchmark Brent rose as high as US$99.50 a barrel, the highest price since 2014, as traders weighed the possibility of disrupted supply from Russia. It later trimmed its gains to settle at US$96.84 a barrel, up 3.5% from the previous day.
