Sally Kellerman in M*A*S*H should tell you quite eloquently why the TV show was a sad joke that you should not cling to.

The only thing wrong with MASH the movie was the final third, which tried to be absurdist, but was merely lame. The first 2/3 of the movie was the stuff of dreams.
Overlapping dialogue had never been done before MASH, at least not that I can recall right at this moment. It was fucking brilliant. Really top flight realization of an obvious conceit.
It got self-derivative a few more movies in, but at that shining moment, it was utterly brilliant. And Kellerman owned every scene she was in. Fuck yes Oscar.
Also, lovely ta-ta's.
Slithering around the shower floor was far too sexy to even admit to noticing.
