Alright folks - if you've been in the @ThrivanceGroup's #DICEEthics Seminar with @DrDesThePlanner here is your reading list, cultivated from over 50 pages of Chat logs. Let's go.
First topic - Ariana Brown and her work on community, arianabrown.com
Next up: Kimberley Jones - How Can We Win - what are the acceptable forms of protest when communities are consistently rendered hopeless?
You need to follow @kimlatricejones and check her site here: kimjoneswrites.com/about

On getting specific to make things matter: "The more specific we are, the more universal something can become. Life is in the details. If you generalize, it doesn't resonate. The specificity of it is what resonates."

I don't think it was this particular piece that was mentioned on Day 1, but the brilliant Rinaldo Walcott was referenced, and it's always a good excuse to link to this: macleans.ca/opinion/we-mus…

Michelle Alexander's "The New Jim Crow" highlights how the prison system impacts everyone. White people are not the target but they are collateral damage. whiteness targets blackness but will destroy its own to maintain itself (Jazz). newjimcrow.com/about
There was so much wisdom being dropped by @JazzJazzBell during Day 1. Their insights into disability, race and access were so powerful. Find them here: jazzbell.me
Thanks again to @JazzJazzBell for linking to the working definition of Ableism developed by @talilalewis and @notthreefifths (too long to tweet, so go read it here and keep yourself updated!) talilalewis.com/blog/working-d…
If you want to see ableism in action, watch the documentary HALE:
OK, so now that we've defined ableism and understand how it harms us all, let's look to a future that considers everyone, and marvel at the benefits that universal design has brought into our lives, and how it can make our lives even better if we let it. penguinrandomhouse.com/books/561049/w…
It wouldn't be a #DignitySquad event if there wasn't art to go with the radical ideas. You need poetry to remind you of the beauty and emotion in the world: graywolfpress.org/books/dont-cal…
And finally, you need REST. Thank you to @TheNapMinistry for always calling out the radical power of rest to reclaim your bodily autonomy. thenapministry.wordpress.com
That's it for the reading list from Day 1. I'm off to rest. Will publish Day 2 tomorrow. Can't wait to reconvene with you all once again.
OK Picking this back up to put Day 2 live! #DICEEthics
The first thing we got into was the Phases of Displacement. We started more broad, with an evaluation based on international development: nzdl.org/cgi-bin/librar…
From there we got more specific, and the must-read "Here to Stay" Report from @ThrivanceGroup was shared. Read it. transformfresno.com/wp-content/upl…
We also got talking about language and its power (always brought about by @franfreemanhkh!), which led to a discussion of how gendered pronouns influence how we perceive the built environment, and what a pronoun like iel can say plainenglish.com/lessons/iel-in…
We talked about how the idealized "types" of people on bikes don't account for so many different types of people, and the importance of broadening that lens in terms of who gets to access public space: portlandoregon.gov/transportation…
Then we got into a bit of a listening list! First up, the always insightful @99piorg 99percentinvisible.org/episode/where-…

But for every step in the right direction, there's setbacks like the Philadelphia Police Union suing the City to be able to continue stopping people with no cause. inquirer.com/news/philadelp…
Imagining a world without police is more than we could get into in a 3 hour seminar. But there are resources shared like We Do This Till We Free Us by Mariame Kaba goodreads.com/book/show/5601…

We didn't get into anything specific beyond highlighting the coming study on how 311 is a biased service, but you should definitely be following @CNT_tweets so that you see that when it drops. #DICEEthics
Language matters. Don't refer to Indigenous Nations as "Stakeholders". ictinc.ca/blog/9-terms-t… #DICEEthics

Finally, Hotel 22 - a short film about how transit becomes a place of refuge. vimeo.com/99568631 #DICEEthics
I'm not going to capture all of the nuance in all of these because they're not my resources. But it's the collective knowledge of 9 hours with over 100 brilliant, empathetic individuals wrestling with complicated issues, crises and dilemmas. #DICEEthics was amazing.

Yesterday I rolled over 1,000 km on our #CargoBike since installing the electric assist on it in April. This thread is an ode to my favourite vehicle with some lessons, experiences and insights. CC @bikeshopgirlcom @urkaiinc
We put the electric assist on this bike because we were talking about needing another vehicle. With 2 working parents and 2 young kids, there’s a lot of travel that happens in our house. The cargo bike has entirely eliminated that conversation.
When I tell people I’ve put a thousand km on, they’re stunned. But that’s almost all in-town travel. Short trips, 2-6 km. Nothing in #Collingwood is far away - we’re very privileged in that way. We also have great trails and calm residential streets to ride on. So it’s safe.
