At the time, my trial felt extreme & brutal & terrifying. My career, reputation, livelihood on line. One day on from Russia invading Ukraine, it feels like mad surreal dream. Did a pro-Putin apologist really get to put me on trial at high court for reporting on his Russian links?
It’s a test case for the public interest defence & it’ll (further) fuck journalism in this country & what we can safely report. But it’s so utterly utterly absurd that it came to this, that I can’t bring myself to care any more what happens to me.
Amazing & honestly fascinating that not a single mainstream outlet other than @guardian covered it. Fresh evidence of Banks’s links to Russia & UK govt’s complicity in covering them up came out in trial & went entirely unreported.
Particularly shameful that @Channel4News ignored given how important their reporting on Banks was & how much it featured in my witness statement. @esmewren you might want to ask your investigations team why that was.
The point is that this was never about me. And end point of allowing story of Russian interference & Kremlin power in UK to be deflected by players involved is a tactic that has helped lead us to the obscenity we are currently witnessing in Ukraine
The death of independent media is the death of democracy. They know this in Ukraine. If you have pennies to spare, send them to these journalists battling not just for their country but for truth 💕🙏🇺🇦
You can also write to any of the moral pygmies in govt & ask them why we are not doing more for Ukraine. Why they’ve refused to act on recommendations of Russia Report. Why even Abramovich hasn’t been sanctioned yet.
I wrote this in Nov 2017. Days after FBI revealed multiple strands of Trump-Russia investigation ran through London & I pulled them apart further. It was also when the attacks against me began in earnest. From Cambridge Analytica, LeaveEU & Russian govt 1/ theguardian.com/politics/2017/…
Nov 17 is when it all suddenly got real. That first FBI indictment revealed it was unpicking a whole web of relationships between the Trump campaign & Kremlin. To people who not only had contacts in the UK. But with actual ministers in the govt. 2/
The govt refused to answer any questions about its own ministers connections to figures FBI was investigating. One week previously, Johnson was asked if he'd seen any sign of foreign interference. "Nyet," he said. There are multiple reasons that we know this can't be true. 3/
The best way we can support Ukrainians is to support @ZelenskyyUa’s demands for tougher sanctions. It is utterly immoral that @boris_johnson is refusing to take action against oligarchs we know are close to the Kremlin & who call London their home
If you’re waking up, it’s worse than anyone imagined. Strikes across entire country. So much of this is on us. We laundered Putin’s money. We provided safe harbour for his chums. And in 2016, when he attacked the US & UK elections, we played dumb & covered it up.
We’re so dumb in this country we didn’t even look. We’re so dumb it was locked by *a man who would be a subject of investigation himself*. Johnson is utterly compromised. His actions clearly demonstrate he’s an active national security threat. And he’s let down Ukraine utterly
While you were sleeping, Putin appeared to threaten the unthinkable. Then launched an offensive in city after city. This does not stop at Ukraine’s borders. And the information chaos he has sown in the West is not some weird coincidence. It was the just the beginning.
Out all day so just catching up with sweeping no-holds-barred sanctions Johnson promised if Russia invaded. Three people sanctioned. THREE! And doesn’t even include oligarch US authorities named as subverting global elections - aka @George_Osborne’s boss
We need to talk about Roman Abramovich. But first we need to talk about Oleg Deripaska.
He’s been major player in UK for more than a decade, he employs a lord & former Chancellor of Exchequer. And - according to Senate Intel Report - he subverts elections
A lot has been said about the cost to me of Arron Banks’s libel suit. But this is an optical trick. Because it’s not to do with me. It’s all about him. About why he’s spent £1m to shut my reporting down. And why he’s so bothered about my 23 words? When his own are so much worse
