After years of pleading poverty and saying there’s no money to fund youth services, closing 9 leisure centres and slashing back other services and facilities to the tune of over £770m, Birmingham City Council have found £134.2m towards the cost of the Commonwealth Games.

1/
But vanity projects like this will not fill the massive holes left in communities after years of vital services being ripped out by the Tories in Westminster and Labour on Birmingham City Council.

2/
We absolutely want more access to sports and exercise facilities, but from the bottom up, not this top down corporate approach! We need community sports facilities, not PR stunts.

3/
If you want an MP who will fight the political establishment for funding for the recreational services we need in Erdington, vote Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition on Thursday 3rd March.

And can you spare a donation to support TUSC? Unsurprisingly, we have no big business backers, so all donations big and small are gratefully received over at nellistforerdington.com/donate.html

There were over 30 of us out campaigning for TUSC across #Erdington yesterday, talking to residents about how a socialist MP like Dave would fight the establishment on the issues affecting working class people, from rocketing energy bills to sorting out the housing crisis.

There’s just over a week until polling day - can you help us get the message out? From knocking doors to delivering our latest leaflet, there’s plenty of chances to get involved, no matter whether you’re an experienced campaigner or new to activism.

Earlier today, Birmingham City Council met to discuss their latest budget, which includes another £107m worth of cuts over the next three years.

1/ Image
This is after £770m already being inflicted by successive Tory and Labour councils since 2010, including 13,000 job cuts and 43 youth centres, 12 nurseries, 21 children's centres and countless other community facilities closed, and successive attacks on the workforce.

2/
We joined members of the GMB trade union on a protest outside the meeting to show opposition to Labour councillors implementing further cuts to vital local services.

Working-class people in Erdington have been thrown under the bus for years now by the council and property developers. While luxury apartments appear in the city centre, social housing declines elsewhere.

[1/8]
To combat the housing crisis we need a mass programme of high-quality council house building and repairs to tackle the waiting list of over 18,000 households and the tens of thousands more who have been excluded from even joining the waiting list.

[2/8]
By Birmingham City Council's own estimate there are currently enough brownfield sites available for 45,000 new homes in Birmingham.

There's a by-election coming up in Erdington in Birmingham - and today @tuscoalition announced that former socialist MP Dave Nellist will be standing to put forward an anti-austerity, pro-worker alternative.

[1/🧵]
Dave, who was the Labour MP for Coventry South East for 9 years and for 14 years a Coventry city councillor for the Socialist Party, was well-known for only taking an ordinary worker’s wage, giving away over half of an MP’s bloated salary – currently £82,000 a year.

[2/Thread]
Like he's done for many decades inside and outside parliament, Dave will be standing to give a voice to the struggles of working class people in Erdington fighting attacks on public services, for decent jobs and for urgent action on the cost of living crisis.
