I spoke on the phone with Oleksiy, whose apartment in Kyiv has been destroyed by a Russian missile in the early morning today. It was on the 22nd floor. He, his wife and three children luckily are unhurt because they were hiding in a bomb shelter at that time 🧵
'We heard a siren at about 8 am and went to the bomb shelter. There, we heard a loud bang, everything around us was shaking. Some time later, we saw photos in a neighbors' chat that our building was hit. We realized our apartment has been destroyed', Oleksiy told me
An entrepreneur in peace time, Oleksiy, his wife and three kids aged 8, 12 and 20 were unable to leave Kyiv earlier due to heavy fighting. Now, they also don't have a place to live. Oleksiy said they will probably have to spend next days and nights in the bomb shelter
'All our neighbors stay in the bomb shelter as well because there is no electricity, heating and water supply in our building anymore', he told me. 'We are frightened of course, but we try to stay strong. I'm trying to joke with my kids to keep their spirits up'

I was staying strong today, not letting my emotions prevail. But I just read a post from my friend and burst into tears. As she and her 5-year old child woke up at the sound of explosions in Kyiv today, her daughter asked 'Mom, so is this war? Have Russians come to kill us?'
Why do our children in Ukraine have to experience this? Why do have have to ask this kind of questions? And - most importantly - what should we respond?
'We will never forgive them, right? We will not make peace and be friends with them? Never ever?' was the next thing this little kid asked.
Ukrainian young generation will never forgive Russians for what they are doing today.

This article (in Ukrainian, but worth translating) provides valuable insight on the situation and mood in self-proclaimed republics. People in Donetsk and Luhansk describe forced conscription of men, including boys as young as 14, to fight against Ukraine hromadske.ua/posts/lyudi-st…
Men are taken away to the army in the streets, on workplaces. One of persons interviewed for the article said her father was told he's being mobilized while at work, given only a short time to pack his belongings. Then, mobile phones are seized from men and they disappear
Some men are hiding from the forced conscription, as they don't want to become cannon fodder. They cannot leave the 'republics' because exit points to Ukraine-controlled territory are closed by Russian proxies, and entry of young and middle-aged men to Russia is banned
