After decades of using combat sports to foster an image as the hard man of global politics, Vladimir Putin’s carefully-crafted persona is crumbling on the world stage. Here are some of the foreign celebrities/athletes who played a role in propping up his dictatorship
🧵
Actor & martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme was among the first foreign celebrities to be pictured w/ Putin, including at MMA events in 2007 & 2010. Van Damme later attended Ramzan Kadyrov’s 35th bday party in Grozny
Steven Seagal was granted Russian citizenship by Putin & became his unofficial celebrity spokesman. He defended annexation of Crimea & regularly pushed Kremlin propaganda. Putin even tried to make him a mediator w/ Washington. Obama was reportedly “flabbergasted” by the proposal
In 2014, actor & former boxer Mickey Rourke lined at a department store in Moscow’s Red Square to buy a T-shirt emblazoned w/ Putin’s face. He later called him a “gentleman.”
“I think he is a good guy. If I didn’t, believe me I wouldn’t wear the T-shirt,” Rourke said.
Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. was granted Russian citizenship by Putin in 2015. He later met with Kadyrov, defended the annexation of Crimea & claimed that Putin was “misunderstood” & a “man’s man.”
“If he says he’s going to do something, he is going to do it,” RJJ said.
In 2018, Putin granted citizenship to MMA fighter Jeff Monson, a staunch anarcho-communist. He would go on to become a politician in Russia & was useful to the Kremlin for his anti-American stances.
At the 2018 World Cup final in Moscow, UFC star Conor McGregor met with Putin and posed for several pictures with the president. He later called him “one of the greatest leaders of our time.”
Putin had already invaded Chechnya, Syria, Georgia, and annexed Crimea by this time.
Despite years of soft power strategies, Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has turned him into a sports pariah. He has been stripped of his honorary World Taekwondo blackbelt & suspended as honorary president of IJF.
Will foreign athletes/actors face consequences for enabling him?

In 2005, Mike Tyson became the first athlete to visit Kadyrov when the warlord was still attempting to seize power. Kadyrov invited him to attend a boxing event & later paraded him in front of state TV. Tyson would visit again years later, long after Kadyrov consolidated power
In 2011, the Chechen leader flew in a group of aging Brazilian heroes (Bebeto, Cafu, Romario) to play a team captained by himself. Months later, he flew in another side led by the Argentine great, Diego Maradona.

THREAD: In the aftermath of Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, far-right groups, pro-Trump militias, and white supremacists are revelling in the chaos caused, all while continuing to spread their propaganda & disinformation. Here is a small sampling:
The neo-fascist Proud Boys hate group bragged on social media about the fear they helped cause, while their leader (who was arrested on Jan. 5 and barred from DC) told them to “never stop fighting”
The NSC 131 white nationalist hate group—founded by former member of neo-Nazi terror group the Base—was present at the insurrection & later posted photos of stolen Capitol police gear while bragging about their role in storming the Capitol
Kyle Rittenhouse, the teen charged with killing two people during protests in Kenosha, has posted $2 million bail.
His lawyer, Lin Wood, went on Steve Bannon's show today & said that people need be prepared for another 1776 & "fight for their freedom" if election is certified
In the aftermath of the shooting in Kenosha, Rittenhouse became a symbol for neo-Nazis & white supremacists around the world. Posters w/ caption "Kyle was Right" can be found in Germany, Poland, Hungary, Serbia, the US, and Canada, among other places.
Here are some more examples in Serbia, Sweden & Germany of Rittenhouse being used in white supremacist propaganda.
The Proud Boys have also shown support for Rittenhouse, with chairman Enrique Tarrio saying "We're here for Kyle."
Thread: Later today, white supremacist, alt-right & neo-nazi groups will descend on Washington,DC for a “white civil rights rally” reminiscent of the ‘Unite the Right’ rally in Charlottesville last year. Some of these far-right groups train in MMA to brawl with counter-protestors
Far-right groups like the Rise Above Movement (RAM) use MMA to recruit new members attracted to the prospect of violence. They refer to themselves as the “premier MMA fight club of the Alt-Right” & use their training to disrupt peaceful protests. propublica.org/article/white-…
Led by boxer Robert Rundo and Benjamin Daley (both exposed by ProPublica), RAM boasts 50 members and engaged in violent activities during protests in Berkeley, Huntington Beach, and Charlottesville. They have also assaulted journalists/ female protestors
