Aishani and Rahul walked along the Sindh, as part of our #MovingUpstream fellowship program.

This map shows their journey route from Seondha to Narwar. It isn’t always a linear journey when walking along rivers.

Handmade maps are a great tool to prepare for field work. It really helps draw routes and locations into your memory.

Take a look at these hand drawn maps by Aishani Goswami, before going to the river.

The story of the Sindh this year is a story of floods & broken bridges. No one in the villages visited by Aishani & Rahul remembered seeing more intense floods than last year.

Yet, limited reporting can be found on the topic.

Sindh's riverscape in this region is dotted with religious sites, as well as sites of human interventions.

They started from a geologically and culturally important site in Seondha, and finished walking close to the many dams on the river.

In our experience, local communities have almost always come forward to help navigate these difficult and lesser known terrains.

"After 3-4 days of walking, we realized that our orientation of day of the week and date of the month became blurry. In contrast, we grew more aware of the time of the day, wanting to manage our day’s walk within daylight"

Government schemes, announcements and actual actions are often at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Challenges of sanitation and basic infrastructure continue to exist alongside bold claims.

The river exists in many forms for people who live along the river, and even for those who live far away.

Destructive activities like intensive sand mining continue to be a big problem. Where is the accountability?

Bhadoria family from Saboli village, who hosted Aishani and Rahul for the night.

What role does gender play in the everyday lives of people? What role did it play in the experience of Aishani & Rahul. There's much in the article about this.

While it seems short, this intensive experience of walking has brought forward a lot many perspectives and learning about River Sindh.

Please find the time to read the article - veditum.org/2022/03/01/sin… - and share it ahead.
