1. #NewYorkTimes carries my photo. ⬇️ This article is also an example of all that is wrong with coverage of climate science by the international media. nytimes.com/2022/03/01/cli…
2. It publishes a piece on a paper that if not exactly “supernova of stupid”, is still very inconsequential. Possibly the only reason it got published is because it is written by senior white male academics. I can't imagine any journal publishing anything like this by me.
3. Of all the things #NYT could have written about, they chose this article. Their prerogative. They talked to me for an hour, where I told them that this journal article has been written from a western privilege point of view and miscontrues scientist pact with society.
4. Saying that there should be moratorium on further climate science research ignores huge knowledge gaps that exists in places like Africa. Also that our societal pact as scientists is not with the governments alone. We have a moral obligation to do science for a broader cause.
5. Yet, the only quote the reporter ascribes to me is the one I say in the passing and was the least important part of that hour long conversation. But then, I suppose, how can a scientist based in the Global South be quoted on something that actually makes sense, huh?
6. I see they have interspersed their article with quotes from other scientists from Global South and I suspect, like me, they had said more interesting and significant things. Diversity is not a photo op, diversity is reflection of opinion that is diverse.
