What Zelensky is doing would make sense if this were a war of extermination, i.e., if Russians wanted to systematically wipe out Ukrainians. Then it's all hands on deck.

The fact that Russians aren't trying to wipe out Ukrainians -- even the media has noted their reliance, for now, on precision strikes -- is probably why Zelensky is using such insane rhetoric that evokes mass murder. You have to literally eject your brain to believe that.
Zelensky *wants* civilians to get killed so that NATO/US will get involved. He faked pictures of himself on the front lines of combat while talking to Sean Penn and suing for expedited EU membership. But he has the interests of civilians at heart?
Conservatives treating Zelensky to hero worship are actually familiar with these tactics, they just come from totally different places and groups like Hamas, which attacks from within populated areas and arms civilians so that retaliation inevitably hurts civilians.
Stuff like "Russia could have mitigated civilian casualties by not invading" is illustrative of how we got into this mess: thinking that other countries don't have legitimate security interests and basing our views of geopolitics around Avengers movies and flag emojis.
