2. The Afwerki regime literally had every independent journalist or activist in the country rounded up and imprisoned in the early 2000s. The whereabouts of most of them are currently unknown.
3. The Afwerki regime has never, ever held even a fake election. The regime has been in power for close to thirty years. It literally puts less effort into pretending to have some semblance of democracy than even North Korea.
4. The Afwerki regime has been participating in a genocide in Tigray, along with the Abiy regime in neighboring Ethiopia, since November 2020. Tens of thousands of civilians (one estimate was 52k as of Feb 2021) have died, over 60k are refugees, and another 20k+ are missing.
