Vincent Simmons’s name has been added to the National Registry of Exonerations. He was freed from Louisiana State Penitentiary after serving 44yrs. A judge ruled Simmons was denied a fair trial. I’ll interview him today for a special @48hours airing in May law.umich.edu/special/exoner…
🧵 My Valentine spent the day with me in a courtroom.
A month and a half ago when I first heard about the case of Vincent Simmons I went down a rabbit hole.
It was a Friday.
I was on vacation.
But I was curious. Obsessively so.
Did he get a fair trial?
I called his attorney.
Watched a documentary about the case.
Read close to 200 pages of court documents.
I wanted to investigate the story but realized that Vincent Simmons had been trying to tell the story for nearly 30 years & nearly a dozen judges dismissed his claims.
So was it worth it I wondered.
I kept going.
For the last two months I’ve worked on the Simmons story and Jeremy has followed every step.
I asked him to watch the documentary about the case.
His interest led him to join me in Marksville, Louisiana today.
BREAKING: A Louisiana judge just ruled Vincent Simmons did not get a fair trial when he was convicted of attempted aggravated rape in 1977. Judge ordered new trial. District Attorney just said he will NOT retry Simmons. Vincent Simmons is a free man after serving 44yrs at Angola.
The moment shackles were taken off his feet
A wild moment in the courtroom as the defense attorney is on the phone with prison officials at Angola. Vincent is sitting here watching. The defense attorney is saying let him go go. The warden at Angola wants him to go back to be processed out.
A black man in Louisiana was convicted of raping white twin sisters, who, when asked to identify “him, said: “all N****** look alike.” Today we aired our month long investigation into Vincent Simmons case. If u watch 1 thing today, consider this. (1/2)

Thank the respiratory therapist.
The custodian who cleans Covid rooms.

President Biden has said in the past: "But I am not joking when I say this, if you are ever working with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect... talk down to someone, I promise you I will fire you on the spot. On the spot. No ifs, ands, or buts.”

Biden went on to say, previously: Everybody... everybody is entitled to be treated with decency and dignity. That's been missing in a big way the last four years.""But I am not joking when I say this, if you are ever working with me and I hear you treat another colleague …
