If you have a budget of Kshs 1,000 for a monthly mobile data plan, you will get the following from the major 4G service providers:
•JTL - 25GB
•Airtel- 12GB
•Telkom- 12GB
•Safaricom- 5GB #TechTip
There are times when mobile data is the most appropriate option for you eg
1. When you're constantly on the move.
Digital nomads need to be always connected to the internet. Mobile data works best because majority of the country is covered by 4G service.
2. Light data user.
They can buy daily data bundles which will cumulatively cost less than Kshs 1,000 monthly. These are people who will mostly use internet for their mobile phones only eg for chat apps, a little browsing or e-mail. Fiber would cost approx 2k #techtips
3. Fixed data connection (aka fibre) is unavailable in your area.
In Kenya, we're still in a stage where fibre coverage is still low. If you happen to live/work in such an estate, 4G will always be the best option. #TechTips
So how do choose the best 4G ISP for your case? 1. Signal strength.
Priority should be on the ISP with the best signal reception in your area. It makes the internet usable, otherwise you'll have data bundles that you can't utilise, the blue team is notorious for this . #TechTips
2. Speeds.
The better the speed, the better your experience is as a user.
Poor internet speeds are like an empty stomach. They can spoil your moods and flare your tempers, they will make you slap your innocent laptop.
Mbugua guys are the champs in speed, miles ahead. #TechTips
3. FUP.
Some ISPs limit the data you can use in a day especially in the monthly packages, if you reach the limit, they throttle your speeds to really low ones. The amount is reset every midnight. This is Fixed Usage Policy. #TechTips
The ISPs argument in the FUP is that the internet connection is a shared resource and therefore if one person uses too much of it, it compromises the experience of others. More on this later #TechTips
4. Cost.
This is a major factor in picking an ISP, but it should be among the very last determinant. An ISP like the green team from Westlands scores highly in many areas but the lowest in cost per GB, but in many cases they are the most usable due to their coverage. #TechTips
Now let's rank the four ISPs based on the different aspects. 1. Coverage
Safaricom>Telkom>Airtel>Faiba 4G #TechTips

3. Telkom

•Used by a lot of students, college students are pros at picking deals 👌🏾.
•Fairly good speeds
•Average countrywide coverage.
Really good choice when it works. #TechTips
4. Faiba 4G.
•Licence holders for B28, this was a big win for indigenously owned Kenyan company.
