@Aaron_Derfel 1) Cuba has had a TERRIBLE Delta wave from June to September 2021. Data hugely underestimated.
2) This wave was the trigger to the historic manifestations that happened around July 11. People living in touristic areas were dying.
@Aaron_Derfel 3) During the manif people were shouting: “We are hungry” “Freedom” but also “We want vaccines”.
4) Many people who were out on the streets are still in prison, including youngsters 16+.
5) The healthcare system collapsed
@Aaron_Derfel 6) The COVID situation was so bad in Matanzas (Varadero) that people started the click word #SOSMatanzas. Same later with Cienfuegos - please have a look at the click words #SOSMatanzas #SOSCienfuegos #SOSCuba
@Aaron_Derfel 7) Doctors from Holguín denounced the terrible situation in hospitals by very courageously editing a video that you can find on the web. It made me very emotional to watch that video considering that they could loose their job or be sent to prison.
@Aaron_Derfel 8) A few days later, the Cuban gov. replied with El Decreto Ley 35, law on cybersecurity criminalizing the diffusion of “false information” that could affect the country’s prestige on social medias.
@Aaron_Derfel 9) During that humanitarian crisis - summer of 2021 - countries sent syringes to Cuba (vaccines could not be injected because of the lack of syringes) and the vaccination campaign was intensified in August-September.
@Aaron_Derfel 10) So the infection and death rate in Cuba has been very much underestimated. Ask any Cuban around you and he/she will tell you of someone they know who has died of COVID (young people...). I cannot even imagine the burden of long COVID on the island.
@Aaron_Derfel 11) The Omicron wave seems to have been very well controlled, you are right. To me, it is a combination of previous exposure to Delta + vaccines recently administered (most got their 3-4 shots in the prior 6 months). True that vaccinating the children must have helped.
@Aaron_Derfel One needs to be very careful interpreting Cuban data. This country has extraordinary capabilities but it is a dictatorship.
