A THREAD on the scary situation of INDIAN STUDENTS IN UKRAINE heard directly from them :

I was travelling from Delhi To Surat. Two of my fellow passengers on the flight were the ones who had just returned from Ukraine and were on the way to their home city. (1/9)

We had a convo regarding the situation there and how they managed to escape from the war-zone.Writing this thread as per whatever,I heard from them.

➡️Why didn't they leave early?

Their Universities weren't offering them online classes and bunking offline classes meant a- (2/9)

penalty of 1500 Rs per class which the middle class couldn't afford. Neither the Indian Embassy was giving a clear instruction to leave Ukraine untill 1st March nor did they pressurise Unis to conduct online classes and allow the students to leave. (3/9)

➡️How did they reach Poland Border?

As the risk continued to rise, they finally decide to leave Ukraine under any circumstances but by the time Ukraine's Air Space was already closed. There were sirens ringing all around the city and cruise missile bombing - (4/9)

going just infront of their eyes. They gathered courage and started to walk in the freezing -18 degree Celsius till 180 km over 3-4 days to reach Poland Border. Many suffered from Hypothermia, Many were with altered consciousness,Many had to be dragged by their fellow mates.(5/9)

Cramps and Lactic acid were soaring on.Muscles weren't ready to go even a step further.They were gulping down 4-4 tablets of painkillers in a go.

➡️What happened at Poland Border?

A new Pandora Box was waiting for them at the Poland Border.All nationals were allowed to- (6/9)

- cross the border except Indians. There was looting and fighting going on everywhere. The exact words quoted by him " I wasn't able to differentiate between reality and dream. I do remember fighting with some black guy but I can't recall whether it was in real or a dream" (7/9)

It took two days to realise that they were made hostages by the Ukrainian Army against the Russians. They somehow decided to cross the fence and run from the Army because they had death waiting whichever way they go.(8/9)

➡️What happened in Poland?

They were given accomodation and medical treatment. Indian Airforce brought them back in a Cargo under Operation Ganga. Indian Embassy and Govt is now evacuating students directly from their respective cities by forming a convoy. (9/9)
