So how effective are COVID-19 vaccinations for children age 5 to 11?

There are emerging data suggesting that protection against infection wanes for vaccinated children in this age group.

But that shouldn’t be a surprise.

latimes.com/california/sto…
Some experts say a vaccination series without a booster shot generally have been less effective in protecting against infection from the Omicron variant of the coronavirus than earlier strains, & children in this age group aren’t eligible for a booster.

latimes.com/california/sto…
The good news is that recent data — a study from New York Department of Health that hasn’t been peer reviewed, & a report published by CDC — underscore that COVID-19 vaccinations for children are protective against severe illness and hospitalization.

Even though children are less likely to get hospitalized than adults, COVID-19 is still causing a level of deaths high enough that the pandemic is considered one of the leading causes of death in children.

What’s far more important in determining a vaccine’s helpfulness is its effectiveness against severe illness and hospitalization — not in avoiding runny noses caused by COVID-19, said Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, chief of infectious diseases at Stanford.

Health experts have been worried about low vaccine uptake in children age 5 to 11. Only a little more than one-quarter of U.S. children are fully vaccinated, while 58% of adolescents age 12 to 17 are.

Figuring out ideal vaccination schedules for kids is more complicated than for adults because children’s bodies can operate in dramatically different ways.

Richard Saghian, owner of Fashion Nova, spent $141 million to buy “The One” mega-mansion, he confirmed to @ldarmiento and @jflem94. latimes.com/business/story…
Saghian beat out four other bidders for the 105,000-square-foot house — the largest home in L.A.

"A house like this will never be built again," said Branden Williams, who listed the home with his partner, Rayni Williams, and Aaron Kirman of Compass. latimes.com/business/story…
Purchasing The One would not only expand Saghian’s real estate portfolio, but could also potentially make sense as a marketing tool for Fashion Nova, serving as a backdrop where its influencers could show off the company’s designs. latimes.com/business/story…

This is Ukraine now.

Eight years of fighting over the country’s breakaway Russian-backed eastern region have morphed into a vicious war for its existence.

Kyiv is virtually encircled. Kharkiv suffers a daily pummeling from shells and missiles.

latimes.com/world-nation/s…
Swaths of the nation’s south have already fallen into Russian hands, as have parts of the east. A nuclear plant has been attacked; Russian shells rain on civilians, many of whom now sleep by the thousands in basements and subways.

The violence has forced a mass exodus of more than a million people to neighboring European countries. Some fled by cars & buses, & others walked miles in 30-degree weather while relatives waited at border crossings.

But, there are fewer safe places.
